Paramount Sued Over Upcoming Renée Zellweger Movie Score

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada has sued Paramount Pictures for allegedly breaching its master contract by recording the score to Renee Zellweger’s upcoming film “Same Kind of Different as Me” in Slovakia.

The suit, filed Monday in Los Angeles federal court, asserts that the studio has violated provisions of its collective bargaining agreement with musicians that require Paramount films produced in the U.S. or Canada to be scored in the U.S. or Canada.

Paramount had no immediate response to a request for comment.

It’s the second such suit filed by Afm within the past two months. The union filed suit on April 27 against Warner Bros., MGM and Paramount for alleged violations of the union’s master contract for recording film scores outside the U.S. and Canada for “Interstellar,” which was produced by Warner Bros. and Paramount; Warner’s “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island »

FIFA-Financed Film ‘United Passions’ Flops at Box Office With $607 Opening Weekend

13 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Even its own film can’t save FIFA. The self-financed movie “United Passions” failed to score at the box office, generating a pathetic $607 in the U.S. on its opening weekend. The unfortunately-timed movie dramatizing the founding and history of the world governing body of soccer opened Friday in limited release in New York and nine other cities. Even soccer-mad Europeans have avoided the on-screen debacle. The film premiered at last year’s Cannes film festival, but six months after its release in Europe had made just $190,000. Disney Xd has just released a teaser trailer for the season premiere of Star Wars Rebels Season 2, which will be double the length of a standard-issue episode of the Disney Xd series. The teaser gives a glimpse at Darth Vader, voiced once again by James Earl Jones, preparing and then finally enacting the Siege of Lothal, a major event in this timeline. Of course, we only got our first glimpse at Vader in the series proper at the end of last season as one of Emperor Palpatine's most trusted agents; Vader did appear, briefly, in the Star Wars Rebels film Spark of Rebellion. In the series, he joins Agent Kallus, voiced by David Oyelowo, and Grand Moff Tarkin, voiced by Stephen Stanton, as the Emperor's most trustworthy commanders to squash the rebellion, after the death of The Inquisitor. J.C. Chandor May Direct The Liar’S Ball for A24

49 minutes ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Filmmaker J.C. Chandor not only has a solid track record thus far, but he’s a director who seems keen on mixing things up and raising his ambition for each subsequent film. His debut, Margin Call, was a talky drama that took place within the confines of a few offices. His next film, All Is Lost, had nearly zero dialogue and took place entirely at sea. To follow that up, he released the thoughtful crime drama A Most Violent Year last winter, and now he’s got his sights set on telling the history of a skyscraper. It was announced today that Chandor is teaming up with A Most Violent Year distributor A24 films to produce and possibly direct an adaptation of Vicky Ward’s book The Liar’s Ball, which recounts the full history of New York’s G.M. Building from before it was built to the present. »

Film Review: ‘0.5 mm’

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A freeloading nurse becomes catnip for lonely old men in “0.5 mm,” a delightful sophomore feature from indie helmer Momoko Ando (“Kakera: A Piece of Her Life”) that exposes Japanese apathy toward its aging population with cool precision, while also capturing the experience of growing old with endearing eccentricity. With a whopping 196-minute running time, it’s no small feat that the pic stays absorbing, propelled by a show-stopping leading performance by the helmer’s sister Sakura Ando (“Love Exposure,” “100 Yen Love”). Still, the narrative would have remained intact even if it had shed the 30-minute epilogue, a measure that might open doors beyond indie festivals.

Adapted from the helmer’s novel of the same title, “0.5 mm” mirrors the book’s chapter-like form and is unusually lopsided in structure by most film standards. Starting with three light episodes before delving into one that takes up more than an hour, the »

Lewis Black, John Lasseter Share Their Core Memory Islands at ‘Inside Out’ Premiere

Everyone was a little emotional Monday afternoon at the L.A. premiere of Disney-Pixar’s “Inside Out” at El Capitan, where a section of Hollywood Boulevard was closed off to create a colorful carnival of the mind ahead of the screening of the film.

Star Amy Poehler, who voices Joy, used her wicked wit as she was swiftly guided along the purple carpet when she was asked if she’d had any imaginary friends: “No, but I have imaginary enemies, and they’re here tonight,” she joked.

“Oh, I love that! We’re going to be Halloween costumes,” said Phyllis Smith, the voice of Sadness, when someone mentioned that they planned to be Sadness for the fall holiday. Smith, who got to work with Poehler in three recording sessions, a rarity in animation voice acting, said of her co-star: “I was a little intimidated because I’d never worked with Amy before, »
