Opening This Week - May 22
The Buzz:
I love it when a major release can maintain a sense of mystery, and now I can see why Brad Bird passed on his Star Wars opportunity in order to make this movie, which is directly connect to Walt Disney's legacy. We've just seen bits of the world Bird has created and I feel as wide-eyed as Britt Robertson's character as opening day draws near. - Arno Kazarian
The Buzz:
Because Gil Kenan has made this movie look like a live-action version of Monster House is the primary reason we aren't completely blasé about the remake factor. Also, we love Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt. Jared Harris seems equipped to pull Maddie (the new Carol Anne) back through her family's HD TV so she can rejoin the physical world.
The Buzz:
Animation fans must be primed to see what The Secret World of Arrietty director Hiromasa Yonebayashi has in store for his second movie.
The Buzz:
Reviews haven't been kind to Claudia Llosa's story idea here, which does seem as though it could ride off its own philosophical rails. We hear the cinematography is great, though. Interesting to note how little advance press Jennifer Connelly and Cillian Murphy did for this one.
The Buzz:
Hard work pays off for Jean-Claude La Marre, the actor/director/writer/producer who has been grinding it out on the direct-to-video circuit for the better part of two decades; his version of Magic Mike scored the interest of Paramount Pictures for a limited theatrical release. It will be interesting to see if this movie has any sort of Faith angle since La Marre is the producer and star of the Pastor Jones series.
The Buzz:
Co-writers/directors Tal Granit and Sharon Maymon apparently have created a film-festival hit that masters its offbeat tone and delivers humor and pathos in equal measure. Just as sure as the movie's subject is sure to attract attention, reviewers have said its performances and overall warmth are two things that will keep audiences talking about it.
The Buzz:
Think of the insane footage Carl Boenish amassed in the pre-GoPro era as he documented his pioneering BASE jumps as the sport began to gain disciples around the world, often with his wife, Jean, flying by his side. We're also looking forward to seeing some of the footage Boenish shot for the John Frankenheimer movie The Gypsy Moths integrated into the documentary.
