Akiva Goldsman Set to Direct Horror Film Stephanie

26 June 2014 9:30 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Screenwriter and director Akiva Goldsman is about to take on a new film project called Stephanie. This will be a horror movie that tells the story of a little girl with "unworldly abilities who was abandoned before a man and a woman show up claiming to be her parents, thereby interrupting her mysterious world."

The last film that Goldsman directed was Winter's Tale, which is a film I haven't seen. It didn't really look that good to me to be honest. But Goldsman is a talented, Academy Award winning screenwriter who has written some pretty incredible scripts in his career. Some of those include A Beautiful Mind; Cinderella Man; I, Robot; The Da Vinci Code; and for some reason he also wrote Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Can't win 'em all, I guess.

Goldsman isn't new to the world of horror as he was the executive producer on Paranormal Activity 2, »

First Look: Ron Howard's Adaptation Of Stephen King's The Dark Tower (Cancelled)

25 June 2014 4:34 PM, PDT | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

Over the years there have been several attempts to adapt Stephen King's epic Dark Tower series for the big and small screen. The closest attempt, and the most ambitious attempt, was Ron Howard's adaptation, with Universal set to produce. Howard planned to make three movies, but there also be a television mini-series in between each film. The financial risk became too much for Universal to bare, so they passed. Howard then took it to Warner Bros. but they too passed due to financial concerns. Last year, Howard said he is still hoping to move forward with the project but would keep mum until there was more concrete news to report. The screenplay was written by Akiva Goldsman ("A Beautiful Mind") and it would've been produced by Brian Grazer, Goldsman and Stephen King. Below, are the first pieces of concept art to surface. Academy Award Winner Tapped to Direct Blumhouse Horror Film Stephanie

25 June 2014 11:34 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Back in 2002 Akiva Goldsman (Batman Forever, I Am Legend) won an Academy Award for penning A Beautiful Mind, and he's gone on to executive produce the first three Paranormal Activity sequels. Next up, he plops down in the director's chair for a horror flick called Stephanie.

Per Deadline, Goldsman has been tapped to direct the Blumhouse-produced tale of supernatural thrills and chills, a story about a little girl with unworldly abilities who was abandoned before a man and woman show up claiming to be her parents, thereby interrupting her mysterious world.

A fall start is being eyed for the film, also produced by Unbroken and The Gotham Group. Jason Blum has a deal with Universal so the pic may go through there.

The story was written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, whose script for this film a couple of years ago was noted as one of the best in The Blood List, »

Akiva Goldsman Will Direct 'Stephanie' for Blumhouse

25 June 2014 11:09 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Filmmaker Akiva Goldsman has signed on to direct the horror-thriller Stephanie for producer Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions company.

The story centers on a young abandoned girl who develops superhuman abilities, whose life is turned upside down when a man and woman claiming to be her parents emerge, which causes havoc on her new gifts. The script was written by Luke Piotrowsky and Ben Collins, which landed on the Blood List back in 2012. The Blood List is the horror-equivalent of The Black list, recognizing the best unproduced horror screenplays. The writers also recently completed a script for Luc Besson entitled Underground, based on Luc Besson's original idea.

Jason Blum and Blumhouse are producing alongside Matthew Kaplan, Adrienne Biddle and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, with Bryan Bertino, Eric Robinson and Nate Matteson serving as executive producers. While the project doesn't have a studio home at this time, Jason Blum has a first-look deal with Universal, »

Akiva Goldsman Will Direct Blumhouse Horror Pic Stephanie

25 June 2014 9:18 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Though his feature directorial debut, Winter’s Tale, was an unqualified disaster on absolutely every level, Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman (for his script for A Beautiful Mind, which also won Best Picture) isn’t giving up the director’s chair just yet. This week, he signed on to helm a horror flick called Stephanie, for Blumhouse, Unbroken and The Gotham Group.

The film will tell the story of a “little girl with unworldly abilities who was abandoned before a man and a woman show up claiming to be her parents, thereby interrupting her mysterious world.”

Though that description doesn’t really give much insight into what Stephanie is actually about, we have reason to be hopeful. Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski’s script was noted as one of the best in The Blood List (like the Black List of most liked but un-produced screenplays, only for horror) a few years back. »

Back in the 1980s, however, well before achieving said A-list status, Connelly was a little-known actress. One major film that put he on the map: Jim Henson’s 1986 film Labyrinth, also famously starring David Bowie.

The film tells the story of Sarah (Connelly), a 15-year-old who wishes her baby half-brother, Toby (Toby Froud), away to Jareth the Goblin King (Bowie). Sarah, who »

Telefilm Canada Supports New Feature Films

Telefilm Canada has confirmed its financial support of nearly $13 million of Canadian tax payers' money towards the production of nine English-language feature films through the 'Canada Feature Film Fund', although there doesn't seem to be anything culturally 'Canadian' about most of their selections, other than the crews that will be working on them.

Among the films receiving money include a psycho horror with a demonic 'Santa Claus', a bio pic about a former Queen of Sweden, the 'relationship' between 'James Dean' and a photographer, a thriller involving a Satanic child abuse sex ring, and an inflatable Sex Doll drug smuggling story:

The films are "After the Ball" (Sean Garrity), "A Christmas Horror Story" (Steven Hoban, Grant Harvey, Brett Sullivan), "Aloft" (Claudia Llosa), "A Worthy Companion" (Jason Sanchez, Carlos Sanchez), "Life" (Anton Corbijn), "Regression" (Alejandro Amenabar), "Rest Home" (Michael Rowe), "The Girl King" (Mika Kaurismäki) and "Zoom" (Pedro Morelli »

David O. Russell, Brian Grazer on Tackling Stigma of Mental Illness

8 May 2014 12:49 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

When it comes to the issues of and surrounding mental illness, David O. Russell, showrunner Jason Katims, Netflix executive Ted Sarandos and producer Brian Grazer universally agreed that the best way to overcome the attached stigma is to talk about it, particularly onscreen. The four entertainment heavyweights convened Thursday at the Paley Center for Media for the “A Leading Role: How Film and TV Can Change the Lives of Children” panel.

Each of the men know someone close to the issue, whether it’s Russell’s son or Katims’ son, both of which have Asperger’s, or even have a personal connection, with Grazer’s dyslexia. Together, they emphasized the importance of broadcasting these issues via their respective modes of storytelling.

The foursome concurred that one of the fastest ways to overcome any stigma is to make it a part of everyday vernacular, something Russell did with “Silver Linings Playbook, »

Brian Grazer: Hollywood Is Making Progress Portraying Disabilities

7 May 2014 5:23 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Hollywood has long struggled to depict different races, genders and faiths on screen. There is another group, just as large as many ethnic minorities, that operates on the margins of Hollywood: the disabled. “A Beautiful Mind,” a 2001 movie about a brilliant but disturbed scientist named John Nash, was a landmark in this realm, helping pave the way for Claire Danes’ bipolar character on “Homeland” and a James Brown movie. In addition to winning filmmaker awards, it caught the attention of the Child Mind Institute, an organizations eager to help kids grappling with disabilities. “A Beautiful Mind” producer Brian Grazer, who. »

Producer Brian Grazer Keeps Mental Issues on the Mind

7 May 2014 4:19 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

For Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer, mental health considerations are front of mind when developing new projects. For “A Beautiful Mind,” it was schizophrenia, while his two most recent films, “Pele” and “Get on Up,” about the Brazilian soccer legend and James Brown, respectively, he said were “on the perimeter” of addressing mental illnesses.

“James Brown grew up very disadvantaged and didn’t really have parents that were present or around, and he was beat up in a burlap sack as a 5-year-old,” he said. Pele “found his way out of extreme poverty in the favelas of Rio,” Grazer added.

Grazer has dyslexia and in 2012 was honored by the Child Mind Institute, a New York-based organization involved in children’s mental health issues. He’s since expanded his involvement with the organization.

Thursday morning, Grazer will be in the company of NBC’s “Parenthood” creator Jason Katims, director David O. Russell, »
