New York City Transit officials yesterday proposed restoring all local stops on the No. 1 train in upper Manhattan and the Bronx. This would eliminate the need for the No. 9 train, which now operates during the weekday commuter rush. Beginning in 1989, when the "skip-stop" service was introduced for weekday daytime hours, the lines alternately skipped stations between 137th Street in Manhattan and 242nd Street-Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. But three stations -- 125th, 181st and 191st Streets -- have since been added as all-day stops, and midday skip-stop service was discontinued in 1994. Sewell Chan (NYT)
