2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Animated Feature

After an incredible streak that brought it 7 trophies in this category, Pixar has been shut out two years running. If there's one thing we can be certain about with next year's Oscars, it's that "Inside Out" will change that. What's more, Pixar has another film coming out by year's end, "The Good Dinosaur," and we'd bet that both end up making the cut. No Pixar original has ever not been nominated here since the category began (though some sequels have missed out). After that... It's a tough game to call. "The Little Prince"? They loved it in Cannes, but it still doesn't have a U.S. release date? "The Peanuts Movie" and "Minions"? They definitely have potential. "Monster Trucks" or "Robo-Dog"? Who knows? 2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Adapted Screenplay

This is one of the few categories with near locks: Can one really imagine Phyllis Nagy's screenplay for "Carol" or Nick Hornby's for "Brooklyn" not eventually making the cut? Even Sundance's "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" has a very strong chance of getting in here for Jesse Andrew's script. In their way stands a lot of very high profile films with big name writers (the Coens for "Bridge of Spies," Aaron Sorkin for "Steve Jobs," and last year's winner for Best Original Screenplay for "The Revenant"), so it's definitely not going to be easy. A year after not one woman was nominated in either screenplay category, it looks like we're heading toward a much needed change of pace. Believe it or not, Amy Schumer could very well be able to call herself an Oscar nominee a year from now if "Trainwreck" can ride its extremely strong reviews to some deserved Oscar buzz (like "Bridesmaids" did when it got a nomination here). And Schumer could be joined by "Bridesmaids" co-scribe Annie Mumolo (teaming with David O. Russell to write the "Joy" script), previous winner here Diablo Cody ("Ricki and the Flash"), Greta Gerwig (who co-wrote "Mistress America" with Noah Baumbach"), Abi Morgan ("Suffragette") and none other than Angelina Jolie (who wrote her next directorial effort, "By The Sea"). 2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actor

Quentin Tarantino has led Christoph Waltz to two Oscars in this category, but Waltz is absent from the director's latest, "The Hateful Eight." That film boasts a whopping seven potential contenders in this category (only of the noted eight is a woman, which could get Jennifer Jason Leigh a nod in the supporting actress race). Kurt Russell, Bruce Dern and Samuel L. Jackson seem like they have the showiest parts, putting them in contention amidst a seemingly endless list of other contenders: Seth Rogen and Jeff Daniels ("Steve Jobs"), Benedict Cumberbatch and Kevin Bacon ("Black Mass"), Tom Hardy ("The Revenant"), Alan Alda ("Bridge of Spies"), Bradley Cooper ("Joy"), Steve Carell ("Freeheld"), Dominic West and Jude Law ("Genius") and Mr. Waltz himself ("Tulip Fever"). Rooney Mara surprised many by taking home the Best Actress prize at Cannes, as many thought her co-star Cate Blanchett would take it -- or the two would share. Whether we like it or not, the moment marked the beginning of Mara's campaign for a second Oscar nomination (and potential win) for Todd Haynes' "Carol." It's just a matter of whether The Weinstein Company will campaign them both in lead, or place Mara in supporting. The latter seems more like Harvey, and if that's the case we can pretty much guarantee that one of the category's five slots will go to Mara. Who joins her? Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Lawrence and Julianne Moore -- our five most recent winners in this category -- all have extremely baiting new films coming out this year, and it's entirely possible that they all come back and make this an epic race of almost all very recent winners. Could they be joined by a slightly less recent winner if Charlize Theron pulls a Sigourney Weaver and gets an all-too-rare (and extremely deserved) nomination for an action film with "Mad Max: Fury Road." Of those six potential nominees, two of them are in films we've already seen at either festivals or in theaters, and they join a very impressive roster of other lead performances that have already seen the light of day (or dark of the movie theater, as it were). Best Actor could once again (as it almost always is these days) be an ultra-competitive race full of some of major A-listers. Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Will Smith, Bradley Cooper (going for his fourth nomination in a row), Robert Redford (who has never won for acting, and is coming off that "All Is Lost" snub) Michael Fassbender (with three juicy roles), Jake Gyllenhaal (with two, and coming off not being nominated for "Nightcrawler") and Don Cheadle -- all of whom have never won -- have films coming out this year that scream Oscar (at least on paper) and all of them are due. They might have to compete against someone who is definitely not due, though, as Eddie Redmayne could be in the running again for his role as a transgender artist in Tom Hooper's "The Danish Girl." It's still a while off before we'll have the answers to the few questions of this year's race that are developing from films that have actually already screened.
