Watch: Patton Oswalt's 'Deleted Scene' From 'Mad Max' Gives Us the One Thing Missing From the Action

According to Patton Oswalt, a fiery electric guitarist standing on a war machine (whose name is the Doof Warrior!) wasn't the only trick "Mad Max" director George Miller had up his sleeve. The comedian and film buff brought a "Deleted Scene" from Miller's action blockbuster "Mad Max: Fury Road" to his guest spot on "Conan" last week, which featured Oswalt as a warm-up comic for the War Boys army. Read More: Review: 'Mad Max: Fury Road' is the Best Action Movie of the Year "Hey Furiosa, I'd be Furiosa too if the barber gave me that haircut," jokes Oswalt's character while standing on top of a flaming war truck.  Conan enjoyed the scene, but had to agree that it deserved the cutting room floor. "I think [Miller] made the right call," he said. "I just don't think it calls for a stand-up comedian." Oswalt tried to argue, but was eventually forced to admit defeat, »

Worlds collide in "Catastrophe", a new Amazon series created by comedian and bestselling author Rob Delaney ("Key & Peele") and award-winning actress Sharon Hogan ("Pulling"). Cannes: Justin Kurzel on His Vision for 'Macbeth' and Fascination With Violence

Read More: Gaspar Noé on Shooting Sex in 'Love' and Why He Loves His Bad Reviews Four years after debuting his first feature film, "The Snowtown Murders," at the Cannes Film Festival, Australian director Justin Kurzel returned over the weekend to the event to premiere his follow-up, "Macbeth," in the main competition. His brutal and robustly acted Shakespeare adaptation marks a huge leap for the filmmaker, whose "Snowtown Murders" was a similarly violent but much smaller film starring a mostly unknown cast. "Macbeth," shot on location in Scotland, comes from mega-producer Harvey Weinstein and stars two of the biggest actors working in film today, Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. Before its premiere on the Croisette, Indiewire sat down with Kurzel to find out why "Macbeth" appealed to him and what it was like to direct his incredible cast. 2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Animated Feature

After an incredible streak that brought it 7 trophies in this category, Pixar has been shut out two years running. If there's one thing we can be certain about with next year's Oscars, it's that "Inside Out" will change that. What's more, Pixar has another film coming out by year's end, "The Good Dinosaur," and we'd bet that both end up making the cut. No Pixar original has ever not been nominated here since the category began (though some sequels have missed out). After that... It's a tough game to call. "The Little Prince"? They loved it in Cannes, but it still doesn't have a U.S. release date? "The Peanuts Movie" and "Minions"? They definitely have potential. "Monster Trucks" or "Robo-Dog"? Who knows? But let's be serious: Pixar is taking this home, one way or the other. Best Animated Feature predictions below. Check out predictions in other categories here. Sure Thing: "Inside Out" We Haven't. »

2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Adapted Screenplay

This is one of the few categories with near locks: Can one really imagine Phyllis Nagy's screenplay for "Carol" or Nick Hornby's for "Brooklyn" not eventually making the cut? Even Sundance's "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" has a very strong chance of getting in here for Jesse Andrew's script. In their way stands a lot of very high profile films with big name writers (the Coens for "Bridge of Spies," Aaron Sorkin for "Steve Jobs," and last year's winner for Best Original Screenplay for "The Revenant"), so it's definitely not going to be easy. Best Adapted Screenplay predictions below. Check out predictions in other categories here. As Sure Things As One Can Get This Early On: Nick Hornby, "Brooklyn" Phyllis Nagy, "Carol" Other Potential Contenders From What We've Already Seen: Donald Marguiles, "The End of the Tour" Marielle Heller, "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" Jacob Koskoff »

2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Original Screenplay

A year after not one woman was nominated in either screenplay category, it looks like we're heading toward a much needed change of pace. Believe it or not, Amy Schumer could very well be able to call herself an Oscar nominee a year from now if "Trainwreck" can ride its extremely strong reviews to some deserved Oscar buzz (like "Bridesmaids" did when it got a nomination here).  And Schumer could be joined by "Bridesmaids" co-scribe Annie Mumolo (teaming with David O. Russell to write the "Joy" script), previous winner here Diablo Cody ("Ricki and the Flash"), Greta Gerwig (who co-wrote "Mistress America" with Noah Baumbach"), Abi Morgan ("Suffragette") and none other than Angelina Jolie (who wrote her next directorial effort, "By The Sea"). Imagine that lineup of nominees? Best Original Screenplay predictions below. Check out predictions in other categories here. The Contenders From What »

2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actor

Quentin Tarantino has led Christoph Waltz to two Oscars in this category, but Waltz is absent from the director's latest, "The Hateful Eight." That film boasts a whopping seven potential contenders in this category (only of the noted eight is a woman, which could get Jennifer Jason Leigh a nod in the supporting actress race). Kurt Russell, Bruce Dern and Samuel L. Jackson seem like they have the showiest parts, putting them in contention amidst a seemingly endless list of other contenders: Seth Rogen and Jeff Daniels ("Steve Jobs"), Benedict Cumberbatch and Kevin Bacon ("Black Mass"), Tom Hardy ("The Revenant"), Alan Alda ("Bridge of Spies"), Bradley Cooper ("Joy"), Steve Carell ("Freeheld"), Dominic West and Jude Law ("Genius") and Mr. Waltz himself ("Tulip Fever"). We truly could go on and on... It will also be interesting to see how many nominees from last year pop up here. Beyond the noted »

2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Supporting Actress

25 May 2015 10:42 AM, PDT

Rooney Mara surprised many by taking home the Best Actress prize at Cannes, as many thought her co-star Cate Blanchett would take it -- or the two would share. Whether we like it or not, the moment marked the beginning of Mara's campaign for a second Oscar nomination (and potential win) for Todd Haynes' "Carol." It's just a matter of whether The Weinstein Company will campaign them both in lead, or place Mara in supporting. The latter seems more like Harvey, and if that's the case we can pretty much guarantee that one of the category's five slots will go to Mara. Who joins her? That depends on how big, small or good dozens of hopefuls' roles are in films we -- in some cases -- won't see until November. The mighty likes of Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Laura Linney, Jennifer Jason Leigh, »

2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Actress

25 May 2015 10:22 AM, PDT

Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Lawrence and Julianne Moore -- our five most recent winners in this category -- all have extremely baiting new films coming out this year, and it's entirely possible that they all come back and make this an epic race of almost all very recent winners. Could they be joined by a slightly less recent winner if Charlize Theron pulls a Sigourney Weaver and gets an all-too-rare (and extremely deserved) nomination for an action film with "Mad Max: Fury Road." Of those six potential nominees, two of them are in films we've already seen at either festivals or in theaters, and they join a very impressive roster of other lead performances that have already seen the light of day (or dark of the movie theater, as it were). There's actually considerably more contenders here that we've already seen than in the Best Actor category, »

2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Actor

25 May 2015 9:49 AM, PDT

Best Actor could once again (as it almost always is these days) be an ultra-competitive race full of some of major A-listers. Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Will Smith, Bradley Cooper (going for his fourth nomination in a row), Robert Redford (who has never won for acting, and is coming off that "All Is Lost" snub) Michael Fassbender (with three juicy roles), Jake Gyllenhaal (with two, and coming off not being nominated for "Nightcrawler") and Don Cheadle -- all of whom have never won -- have films coming out this year that scream Oscar (at least on paper) and all of them are due. They might have to compete against someone who is definitely not due, though, as Eddie Redmayne could be in the running again for his role as a transgender artist in Tom Hooper's "The Danish Girl." Could Eddie Redmayne be the next Tom Hanks or Spencer Tracy, »

2016 Oscar Predictions: Best Picture

25 May 2015 9:11 AM, PDT

It's still a while off before we'll have the answers to the few questions of this year's race that are developing from films that have actually already screened. Whether Sundance breakouts "Brooklyn" and "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" pull a "Boyhood" or "Whiplash," for example? Or what about Todd Haynes' "Carol"? Can it ride its Cannes buzz to finally nab the director a Best Picture nomination? Will "Inside Out" return Pixar to the big race? Does "Mad Max: Fury Road" have what it takes to be an extremely rare summer blockbuster slash Best Picture nominee?  These questions cannot be answered until the many potential legends of the fall arrive at film festivals or in theaters.  Like "The Hateful Eight," "Joy," "The Revenant" and "Bridge of Spies."  Will they quickly return Quentin Tarantino, David O. Russell, Alejandro González »

The 11 Grossest Movies Ever

25 May 2015 8:16 AM, PDT

[Editor's Note: This post is presented in partnership with Time Warner Cable Movies On Demand in support of Indie Film Month. Today's pick, "The Human Centipede: Part III (Final Sequence)," is available now On Demand. Need help finding a movie to watch? Let TWC find the best fit for your mood here.] "The Human Centipede: Part III (Final Sequence)" is a really bad movie. Don't mistake our C- for mediocrity, or what Metacritic considers "average." It's bad... like, realizing you ran out of toilet paper too late kind of bad. And it's gross, also like realizing you ran out of toilet paper too late. But it's not the grossest movie ever. Watch: The Future of Acting in the Technological Age

25 May 2015 6:30 AM, PDT

In the 2013 film "The Congress," Hollywood studios digitally scan actors and then make films starring computer-generated characters. It's a futuristic vision that is, in fact, happening on a much smaller scale right now as advancements in 3D scanning, motion capture and digital rendering are blurring the line between human and hologram. Watch: This Short Film Was Shot on the Last Batch of Fuji Film

Read More: Is Shooting on Film Worth the Money? This Up-and-Coming Dp Thinks So In March 2013, Fuji discontinued Motion Picture Film production. The following year, first-time filmmaker Hunter Hampton decided to take the opportunity to shoot on Fuji film while it was still around, being distributed by third parties around the globe. He bought 10 film rolls off a guy named Guy, and the result is the video above.  The video follows a couple, intercutting between scenes over the course of their relationship. All the while, it is voiced over by the two actors, using a blissfully tender conversation that took place prior to their engagement. Through the Aaton Xtr camera that Hunter Hampton employs, we follow the lovers from a Malibu beach, to a coolly lit apartment, to a cafe, to a Chinese restaurant and to a kitchen, where the two quarrel over the husband's feelings of jealousy towards the wife's phone (specifically Instagram, »

Cannes: Salma Hayek on Eating Monster Hearts and Taking Direction From a Child

25 May 2015 6:04 AM, PDT

Read More: The 2015 Indiewire Cannes Bible Cannes always attracts the most glamorous people in the world. But the most adorable? This past week, the hands-down champ was Salma Hayek. The Mexican actress (and wife of billionaire François-Henri Pinault, owner of the luxury-goods conglomerate Kering) charmed the pants off the international press corps, with her candid remarks, earthy sense of humor, and frothy demeanor. Hayek was in town promoting "Tale of Tales," Matteo Garrone’s fantasmagoric adaptation of three stories from Giambattista Basile’s 17th century fairy tale collection "The Pentamerone," in which she eats the heart of a beast. Highlights from her roundtable discussion are below:Eating that enormous sea serpent heart almost made her vomit."I was really gagging. It was very demanding and the Italians were very stressed, and Garrone does so many takes and there were so many prop hearts. He wanted the heart inside to look exactly like a heart, »

Review: 'Game of Thrones' Season 5 Episode 7 'The Gift' Doesn't Bounce Back From Last Week's Trauma

24 May 2015 9:35 PM, PDT

Previously: Review: 'Game of Thrones' Season 5 Episode 6 'Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken': When the Series Betrayed Sansa Stark Post-"Game" AnalysisAt the beginning of this episode, as Jon Snow and Tormund Gianstbane began prepping their horses and readying to head out north of The Wall, one fact became evident: We haven't seen Ghost at all this season. Thankfully that omission was finally remedied; perhaps HBO had been saving all of their budget for the dragons this season, but hopefully we'll be seeing more of Ghost now that he's back in the game. In Dorne, Myrcella rejected Jaime's instruction that she return to King's Landing -- naturally, because she's a teenager in love and her stupid uncle knows nothing about her anyway. Elsewhere, Stannis rejected both Davos's proposal that they turn back to Castle Black and Melisandre's proposal that they somehow use Shireen in another of her magical spells.
