Fox has signed “The Fault in Our Stars” director Josh Boone to direct the X-Men spinoff “The New Mutants,” which introduces several new characters to the “X-Men” movie universe.

Boone will also co-write the script for the untitled project with Knate Gwaltney. Producers are Simon Kinberg with Lauren Shuler Donner.

Boone’s “Fault in Our Stars,” starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, was a surprise hit for Fox, with over $300 million in worldwide grosses on a $12 million budget. He’s also attached to direct Stephen King’s “The Stand” for Warner Bros. and has said that the studio is planning a four-part franchise.

The first team of teenage New Mutants characters appeared in Marvel Comics in 1982 and was created by Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod.

Fox’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” delivered solidly for the studio last summer with $748 million in worldwide grosses. It’s dated Ryan Reynolds’ “Deadpool” for Feb. »
