The end of the world season is upon us: The Last Man on Earth finale airs Sunday at 9:30 p.m. on Fox. And Tandy, the man formerly known as Phil Miller (Will Forte), has been doing his best to alienate the very few survivors left on this planet.
“He has dealt with every situation in every scenario in the exact wrong way, and it always catches up to him,” star/creator Will Forte tells EW. “There have been very little repercussions so far, but in this episode, there are repercussions.” As evidenced by last week’s episode, they will clearly involve the newest Last Man on Earth, that Special Forces soldier-turned-Habitat for Humanity contractor (Boris Kodjoe) who is also named Phil Miller and has formed a romantic connection with Carol (Kristen Schaal).
Hoping for a few more specifics? Unlike his very selfish character, Forte totally has your back. Here, he gives you seven teases for this season’s last episode.
1. The old Phil will face off with the new Phil. “There is a showdown between the two Phils,” he says, “and things get very, very tense. It is a moment of reckoning.”
2. Tandy and Todd (Mel Rodriguez) have decided to kill the new Phil, but how solid is their plan? “Todd and Phil decide that the best thing for the community is to kill the new Phil so they can go back to the way their life was before,” he says. “But the question is whether they can go through with it. And that’s a question we all have to ask ourselves: Can we go through with murdering somebody? It’s a real question society has to ask.”
3. Tandy may be developing feelings for Carol again. (Or would that be for the first time?) “Phil sees this relationship springing up between the new Phil and Carol, and it puts his relationship with Carol into perspective, and he sees Carol in a whole new light,” he says. “But he’s kind of dug himself into a hole.”
4. You will see the old Phil sing a song that was written by Mary Steenburgen (who plays Gail). “We were searching for a song for this one [scene], and she writes a lot of music and we just happened upon her while she was talking about singing,” he says. “She sang us this song and we thought, ‘That’s perfect!’ So we have a Mary Steenburgen composition in this. Lyrics and music. Mary Steenburgen is so rad.”
5. The episode doesn’t end on a cliffhanger. It ends on two. “The episode resolves in a slightly surprising way, and then just some bonkers thing happens. It comes out of nowhere, grabs you by the balls, and does not let go.”
6. That “bonkers” thing was actually supposed to take place earlier in the season. “We were actually going to end episode 6 with this, and then we just thought, ‘Oh my god, this is too good of an ending—we gotta save it!’” recalls Forte. “We thought it would be a nice little cliffhanger… It’s something that opens the door to a really fun new situation.”
7. Desperate times call for… makeshift food. “This episode is filled with pathos, with suspense, and with toilet paper corn dogs.”
