Christopher Nolan Says His Filmmaking Process a ‘Combination of Intuition and Geometry’

21 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Christopher Nolan described his filmmaking process as “some combination of intuition and geometry” in one of the Tribeca Talks series of public conversations at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival.

“I don’t write a story outline,” he told a packed house of festivalgoers during the discussion with fellow director Bennett Miller (“Foxcatcher,” “Moneyball”). “Usually my answer right off the bat is that I work intuitively, but I draw a lot of diagrams when I work. I do a lot of thinking about etchings by Escher, for instance. That frees me, finding a mathematical model or a scientific model. I’ll draw pictures and diagrams that illustrate the movement or the rhythm than I’m after.”

Intuition, he noted, comes to the fore in his editing process. “I’ve always edited in a huge hurry, tried to catch that lightning in a bottle, just so the energy is there,” he said. “I »

Filmgoing at its Best: Ebertfest 2015

Roger Ebert launched a film festival in Champaign, Illinois 17 years ago and his indomitable wife Chaz has kept it going strong, with the support of the community where Roger grew up and a loyal crowd of movie lovers who come from near and far. My wife and I attended for the first time this past weekend and had a wonderful time. We met nothing but friendly, enthusiastic people and interesting filmmakers, and got to watch movies on a giant screen at the beautifully restored Virginia Theatre.  Because of my teaching schedule at USC, we missed the first two days’ activities, including a showing of James Ponsoldt’s The End of the Tour (with the director and his star, Jason Segel, in...

Director Bennett Miller went mano-a-mano with director Christopher Nolan Monday evening before a packed, film-crazy crowd at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center as part of the Tribeca Film Festival. Actually, it was more bromance than smackdown, as Miller (Foxcatcher, Moneyball, Capote) played admiring interlocutor to the amiable Nolan (Interstellar, Inception, Memento). Their only prior work together had been in the area of keeping film stock alive. After running through… »

Gotham Recap: “Under the Knife”

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

"Under the Knife" was the first episode in a while that felt like it was a chapter in a bigger story rather than a self-contained snapshot. That's not saying it was overly successful since the character and plot decisions made along the way have been misguided and often head-scratchingly confusing, but at least the cobbled-together storyline is gelling together just enough to get Gotham across their debut season's finish line. China Box Office: ‘Furious 7′ Runs to $250 Million 8-Day Total

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

China’s box office told only one tale over the past week – the blistering pace of “Fast and Furious 7,” which broke records and left all competing titles standing.

The past seven days saw the film add $186 million to its huge first-day score, bringing the eight-day total to $250 million, according to Chinese data service Ent Group. The film was watched by some 29 million Chinese spectators, who paid an average of $6.3 per ticket for the privilege.

While the cinema owners and fans may have been cheering, the massive score sent shivers around other sections of the industry. Chinese filmmaker Feng Xiaogang, speaking at the Chinese directors awards a week ago, said that it sets the bar ever higher for the locals to compete.

And many in the industry have been wondering if “Furious 7” will at some stage be removed from screens by regulators who judge that it has taken enough »

Chalk Up Another Win For Those Adorable Minions

There are all kinds of things that illustrate how big a cultural impact a movie has. Maybe dialogue weaves its way into our collective lexicon, perhaps The Simpsons spoofs a film in an episode, maybe it gets a porn parody. Now the Despicable Me movies have found a unique lasting imprint, as the mischievous Minions have inspired their very own color of paint. You may look at the naughty little buggers and think, "They look yellow," but now and forever more, that precise shade will be known as "Minion Yellow," according to the Pantone Color Institute. This particular hue is Pantone.s first ever character-branded color, and they worked with Illumination Entertainment to create a shade that is "illuminating, energetic, friendly and fun-loving yellow shade that immediately calls out to you.   Pantone.s Executive Director, Leatrice Eiseman says: Just as the sun.s rays enliven us, Pantone Minion Yellow is »

The Driftless Area Review | Tribeca 2015

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

First-time feature writer-director Zachary Sluser clearly has something to say about metaphysics, the idea that we’re all connected and karma, but none of it makes much of an impression due to the extremely loose, bemusing and rather dull narrative in The Driftless Area. The movie opens with a scene between Pierre (Anton Yelchin) and Shane (John Hawkes). Pierre’s stranded on the side of the road and Shane’s nice enough to give him a lift, but eventually the two get into an argument and Shane gives Pierre the boot. However, instead of driving off and leaving Pierre in the dust, Shane accidentally drives his truck off the road, giving Pierre the opportunity to get back at him and take off with his bag of stolen cash. It’s an amusing opening that introduces two curious characters who inadvertently get into a madcap scuffle, but immediately after, the charm »

The new deal was concluded Sunday after two weeks of negotiations between the union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. IMAX’s Greg Foster Talks Laser Projection and if Older IMAX Films Could Return to Theaters

2 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Last week I got my first taste of IMAX laser projection when the company invited a few reporters to the Chinese Theater in Hollywood for a special presentation. While I’d heard laser projection was the future, until last week I’d never seen it in action. After watching a few trailers and movie sequences on one of the biggest movie screens in the world, I’ve been converted. What’s amazing about the IMAX laser projection system is that every part of the screen – from the lower left corner to the top right – was absolutely crystal clear, super bright, and the contrast and black levels were superb. One sequence featured a train rolling along on a mountainside track with smoke billowing out of the top and it looked like I was watching real life coming through a movie screen. We also got to watch the first Star Wars: »

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Spinoff to Star Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood

2 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

More details are surfacing about the proposed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff that we caught wind of a couple weeks ago. While not a ratings smash, the Marvel series has found its footing in Season 2 and does appear to be holding a loyal if relatively small audience, and ABC is open to possibility expanding the franchise despite the disappointment of Agent Carter. When word first broke about a potential Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff, details were non-existent, but now casting news has surfaced that shines a light on the idea. Per Deadline, Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood—who joined Season 2 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Mockingbird and Lance Hunter, respectively—are finalizing deals to headline the spinoff series. This seems to suggest that the new show would revolve around these two characters, a former husband and wife duo that also happen to be highly trained spies. Joe Wright's 'Pan' Gets Fall Release Date: Good News or Bad News?

2 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

For example, why has Warner Bros. postponed the release of Peter Pan origin tale “Pan” from the height of summer--July 24, opposite Marvel's "Ant Man," followed a week later by Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation”--to a more forgiving October 9th? If they're trying to get out of the line of fire in a competitive marketplace it suggests a lack of confidence that they can compete with the big boys. “We wanted to give ‘Pan’ the space to extend its theatrical run, so taking it out of the cluttered summer season made the most sense,” WB distribution exec Dan Fellman said in Variety. In other words, this movie could use good reviews and word of mouth.  Joe Wright is not a blockbuster guy. He's a good choice to handle material with period frills and action pieces--he's a fabulous visual and actor's director often in the awards conversation, from "Atonement »
