Drive-In Dust Offs: The Beast Within

The horror landscape was changing by 1982. People were tiring of slashers; even the Halloween franchise decided to take a left (some would say wrong) turn away from Shatner masks and sharpened knives, and used the brand name to explore the holiday itself in the perpetually under-appreciated Season of The Witch. The genre seemed to be turning towards monsters, from large scale dread fests such as John Carpenter's The Thing to more intimate fare like Frank Henenlotter's Basket Case. The horror films of 1982 displayed a refreshing variety of ways to make audiences jump, squirm, gasp, smile, and when the occasion arose, vomit. The Beast Within giddily checks all the boxes.

Released in February by United Artists, the film took in a total of 7.7 million at the box office. Those were not great numbers, and the reviews were worse. Mainstream critics in general have never been kind to horror; almost »

Jared Leto’s Joker Officially Revealed in Suicide Squad Image

24 April 2015 9:52 PM, PDT

To celebrate the Clown Prince of Crime's 75th birthday, director David Ayer gave those looking forward to Suicide Squad a fitting present: the first full, official look at Jared Leto as The Joker.

Ayer revealed the eye-popping photo on Twitter, showing a shirtless Joker wearing one purple glove (pressed against his green hair) with eyes wide and chrome-toothed mouth open wide in what looks to be a crazed laugh. His chest and arms are covered in tattoos, and his forehead is marked with one telling word: "Damaged."

Time will tell if Leto's performance can come anywhere near the intensely immersive depths of Heath Ledger's mesmerizing turn as the character in 2008's The Dark Knight, but the new take on the Harlequin of Hate is certainly memorable.

Shooting on Suicide Squad is currently underway with Ayer in the director’s chair and Charles Roven and Richard Suckle producing. Warner Bros. »

Rob Zombie Reveals Two More Photos from 31

24 April 2015 2:45 PM, PDT

Two eerie scarecrow creations make for an unsettling atmosphere in one of two new photos from Rob Zombie's 31. Currently in the editing stage, Zombie's latest Halloween-set horror film will feature eclectic, creepy characters aplenty, including Sick-Head, Doom-Head, Sister Serpent, Father Murder and more.

"Welcome to my next film. It is called 31. It is the story of five random people kidnapped on the five days leading up to Halloween and held hostage in a place called Murder World. While trapped inside this man-made Hell they must fight to survive playing the most violent game known to man... a game called 31.

31 has no rules. 31 has no boundaries. It is ever so simple. Do whatever you can do to kill your opponent before they kill you. Keep this up for 12 hours and freedom is yours.

Who are the opponents? Well... a group of vile, filthy, blood-thirsty clowns known as The Heads. »

Blu-ray Review: Escape From New York

24 April 2015 1:55 PM, PDT

After revisiting John Carpenter's Escape From New York, I am pleased to say that this thrilling dystopian masterpiece still holds up great and maintains its tough cynical bite at authority, appropriately reflecting the mistrust society still has with political authority today. What truly makes Snake Plissken remain an iconic character is not just his nihilistic manner and rebellious attitude, it's mostly the mystery that surrounds him. With Hollywood's urgent need today to over-explain every character and world in popular entertainment properties till every sense of awe and wonder that made these movies great die with one last desperate gasp, it's refreshing to revisit a time that respected the power of mystery and mythology.

Snake is a lone gunslinger with combat skills, an Eastwood growl, and an eyepatch who's seen some crazy shit and is thrown into a dangerous situation with his life on the line—that's all this movie needs to explain, »

24 April 2015 9:21 AM, PDT

With his unique perspective on life, intimidating figure, and life-squeezing strength, it's easy for Frankenstein's monster to steal the spotlight in films concerning his creation. Chris Columbus Talks Gremlins Reboot

23 April 2015 9:15 AM, PDT

If you were heartbroken to hear that Joe Dante's seminal holiday horror comedy Gremlins (1984) was on the track to being remade, you can cling to some hope that characters from the original film (perhaps both human and otherwise) will be involved in the new entry to the beloved franchise. In a recent interview, Chris Columbus—who wrote the original Gremlins and will produce the new film—shared details that hint at the Gremlins reboot being more along the lines of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek films and upcoming Star Wars movie in terms of mixing familiar faces with new characters. It sounds like this new Gremlins film could be more of a sequel than a remake.

Collider spoke with Columbus at CinemaCon about the Gremlins reboot, a project Warner Bros. recently hired Carl Ellsworth (Goosebumps movie, Disturbia, Red Eye) to write. Columbus discussed revisiting the idea of a Gremlins »
