Daredevil Recap: “Cut Man”

New episodic recaps of Daredevil post every Monday and Thursday. Read the recap of the premiere here. Daredevil’s “Cut Man” begins with Matt Murdock finding himself much the worse for wear, waking up bruised, bloodied, and beaten in an alleyway dumpster, only to be discovered by a frightened teenager. The teen brings Matt to the apartment of Claire (Rosario Dawson), a working nurse who is not that pleased with finding a masked, nearly dead man bleeding out on her apartment’s couch. Matt’s been busy, fighting Russian mobsters responsible for kidnapping a young boy from his beaten father, who are now on Daredevil’s tail. Claire, understandably, suggests that Matt be taken to a hospital and treated properly, only to be refused as Daredevil informs her that should he go to a hospital, “they” will kill every patient there in an attempt to get at him. Wonder Woman Loses Director Michelle MacLaren

Today in Really Disappointing News, Wonder Woman has lost its talented director Michelle MacLaren. THR is reporting that MacLaren, who has previously directed episodes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones, has left the project over “creative differences”. In a statement, the studio said, “Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together.” [caption id="attachment_125378" align="alignright" width="350"] Image via Alex Ross[/caption] That’s a damn shame. MacLaren has clearly got the chops to handle drama and spectacle, and Wonder Woman was the highest-profile blockbuster to get a female director. Her filmography showed she could have been well-suited to the character, and Wonder Woman needs to be right since it will be the first blockbuster superhero movie featuring a female character if Warner Bros. sticks to its 2017 release (Marvel’s Captain Marvel isn’t due until 2018). Sun Choke Trailer Brings Horror Into the Daylight

With the Stanley Film Festival just a few weeks away (more on that here), we're getting an advance look at one of the films that will be making its debut there. Sun Choke was written and directed by Ben Cresciman and stars Sarah Hagan (Freaks and Geeks) and Barbara Crampton (You're Next, We Are Still Here). The movie comes from Lodger Films and looks like it takes a unique aesthetic approach to the horror genre with its brightly lit frames. Cresciman told THR "So much of horror takes place in darkness. I bring that kind of story into the sunlight." Check out the Sun Choke trailer below. Here's the official synopsis for Sun Choke: Janie’s just trying to get well. As she recovers from a violent psychotic break, she’s subjected each day to a bizarre holistic health and wellness regimen designed, and enforced, by her lifelong nanny and caretaker. »

Captain Marvel: Writers Behind Guardians and Inside Out to Pen Script

Captain Marvel is on her way. Marvel Studios continues to develop its first female-led superhero movie for release in 2018 (after what will have been 19 male-led superhero films for the studio, it’s about damn time), and it appears that they’ve zeroed in on the first piece of the puzzle for making Captain Marvel a reality: screenwriters. THR reports that Nicole Perlman, who co-wrote Guardians of the Galaxy, and Meg LeFauve, who co-wrote Pixar’s upcoming Inside Out, are in negotiations to pen the screenplay for Captain Marvel. However, Marvel Studios is taking a unique approach in crafting this script. Apparently Marvel President Kevin Feige had met separately with Perlman and LeFauve about their takes on the property, but he liked both ideas so much that he’s combining the two for the finished film. This is similar to a different kind of development that’s becoming more commonplace in Hollywood, »

Captain America: Civil War Will Be the First Film Shot In IMAX Digital 2D

It's not all that surprising that this would happen, but it's definitely one of several notable developments as traditional film use (unfortunately or not), recedes out of view. Today it was announced that some of Captain America: Civil War will be shot on the new IMAX/Arri 2D digital camera. And while it's true that IMAX does have a digital 3D camera, moving into the digital space for their 2D work feels significant. While only 15 minutes or so of Captain America: Civil War (described as a sequence with "incredible scale") will be shot with the unit, we can expect lots of filmmakers to use the camera more frequently thereafter since it likely cuts down on the sound, weight and cost of going the traditional IMAX route. [caption id="attachment_319913" align="alignright" width="360"] Image via Disney[/caption] Captain America: Civil War co-director Joe Russo summed up this digital trend change to Variety when he commented: “It allows »

Silicon Valley and Veep Renewed for Further Seasons

Two of HBO’s best comedies will return in 2016. HBO announced today that it has ordered Silicon Valley Season 3 and Veep Season 5, just a day after the shows began their second and fourth seasons, respectively. This is fantastic news and bolsters HBO’s Spring 2016 lineup, with Game of Thrones and Last Week Tonight having already been renewed. Created by Mike Judge, Silicon Valley gained both critical and commercial praise for its first season, and judging by last night’s Season 2 premiere it hasn’t lost its step. Indeed, Allison said the show is still “the perfect blend of nuanced tech speak and sparklingly creative vulgarities” in her review of the first few episodes. If you missed it, check out Chris’ full recap of the season premiere right here. [caption id="attachment_436927" align="alignright" width="360"] Image via HBO[/caption] As for Veep, the political comedy also continues to soar thanks to an impeccable ensemble cast. Mark Ruffalo Reveals Universal Owns the Rights to Solo Hulk Movies

It took three tries to get the right actor for Hulk, but Marvel finally found him by casting Mark Ruffalo for The Avengers. The character has lost none of his popularity in Avengers: Age of Ultron, so why isn’t he getting his own solo feature? Check out the video below for Ruffalo talking about his contract and how it allows for Hulk standalone movies, but we probably won’t be getting one because of rights issues. [complextv contentid="c3Nm1odDqt5F30cnHX7mGqgwMSQ8j6fc" sitename="collider" playerid="26aa5f02d93f4c05a4546f6d5ecb59b7" adsetid="67a3ff9d3a842ae818bb9de1badc5b0" width="600" height="360" keywords=""]   [caption id="attachment_417024" align="alignright" width="350"] Image via Marvel[/caption] Collider: How many pictures do you have left on your Marvel contract?   Mark Ruffalo: I think it’s four now, but that could always go further. That could include different—I could show up in another character’s movie; I could do Avengers 3 and 4; I could do a Hulk standalone; I could do a combination of those things. That’s four or five, I think. Great! So Ruffalo »

X-men: Apocalypse: Olivia Munn Is Psylocke

The cast of X-Men: Apocalypse continues to grow, and Olivia Munn is the latest addition to the ensemble. Director Bryan Singer announced on Instagram today that the Newsroom and The Daily Show alum has signed on to play Betsy Braddock in the X-Men: Days of Future Past follow-up. Braddock is, of course, otherwise known as Psylocke, a mutant with the power of telepathy. In Psylocke’s early appearances she simply played with her telepathic powers, but she later transformed into a Japanese ninja assassin, giving her additional highly developed fighting skills. Munn is of Chinese descent and was raised in Japan before moving back to the States, so it’ll be interesting to see if this iteration of Psylocke begins with her assassin powers intact, or if she’s simply a telepath. I like Munn a lot (she was the highlight of The Newsroom), so whatever the case, I'm excited »

Scarlett Johansson Teases “Psychological Twists” in Captain America: Civil War

Black Widow has been a curious character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She’s one of the few major superheroes that has yet to get her own standalone film, but she’s been put to solid use as a key component of the McU. Though she debuted in Iron Man 2, Widow really flourished in The Avengers, and thanks to her relationship with Steve Rogers in the movie, she went on to co-star opposite Chris Evans in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Following next month's sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron, Scarlett Johansson is poised to don the suit again straight away in Captain America: Civil War. But unlike The Winter Soldier, which focused almost exclusively on Cap, Captain America 3 is pulling together a number of characters from the McU to kick off the Civil War storyline—including Black Widow. New Avengers: Age Of Ultron Clip Finds Black Widow Calming a Moody Hulk

This morning, Marvel released the first Avengers: Age of Ultron clip featuring a very aggressive Hulk battling Tony Stark’s Hulkbuster armor. This afternoon, Marvel has released another Age of Ultron clip of a different sort, showing a sweeter and softer side to Mark Ruffalo’s big green guy. If it wasn’t evident from the trailers, this clip settles it: there’s something going on between Bruce Banner and Black Widow. Scarlett Johansson softly calms the angry Hulk down, resulting in a de-transformation back into Banner. The clip is a nice preview of some compassion that I hope permeates throughout Age of Ultron, and it also provides an excellent look at the advanced CG effects used to bring Hulk to life in the follow-up. He was one of the standout characters of The Avengers, and it looks like Joss Whedon and his team have made him even better from a visual standpoint. »

Spider-Man Is Not in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, Says Kevin Feige

With the papers signed and an impossible deal reached, we will be seeing Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sooner rather than later. Per the terms of the deal, Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige are producing a standalone Spider-Man film for release in 2017, but the character is officially poised to make his debut first in another McU movie. Reports have been pretty certain that Spidey will make an appearance in next May’s Captain America: Civil War, but there’s been some chatter recently that the new webslinger might be popping up earlier than that. Much earlier. Rumors have swirled that Marvel may be adding a tag to the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron featuring Spider-Man, giving audiences their first taste of the Marvel Studios-steered iteration of the superhero. Steve recently spoke with Marvel President Kevin Feige at the sequel’s press day and posed the question directly: »

Shadowhunters: McG to Direct First Episode of Mortal Instruments TV Show

I didn’t think I could be any less confident in ABC Family’s The Mortal Instruments TV show, Shadowhunters, but then in came this update. According to Deadline, McG is set to direct the first episode and executive produce the straight-to-series drama based on the Cassandra Clare-penned Ya books, which is scheduled to go into production in Toronto next month. Back when Constantin Film first announced plans to turn the source material into a show, I thought they were nuts. Their 2013 film adaptation was expected to kick off a franchise but tanked, taking in just $31.2 million total at the domestic box office. If you tack on the international earnings, it brings the grand total to $90.6 million, which is well clear of the supposed $60 million production budget, but even then, that number still suggests the large majority aren’t interested. Zoolander 2: First Look at Cyrus Arnold as Derek Zoolander’s Son

We're still a ways away from getting a solid sense of what Zoolander 2 will actually be about, as the sequel isn't slated to hit theaters until February 2016, but a few photos and hints of what is in store have been trickling out over the last few months. There was that rather perfect runway gag that Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson played up at Paris's fashion week, and the announcement that the script for the sequel is penned by Stiller's Tropic Thunder collaborator and all-around hilarious heartthrob Justin Theroux. On top of this, we now have a solid glimpse at what Zoolander's progeny might look like, as Stiller posted a photo of newcomer Cyrus Arnold, who will play Zoolander Jr. in the sequel, and himself in Zoolander garb to Instagram earlier today. Watch: Christopher Nolan Tribute Video Journeys Through His Filmography in 15 Minutes

Christopher Nolan is one of the most successful filmmakers working today. In fact, he’s one of very few directors (maybe the only one) that basically have carte blanche when it comes to choosing projects and getting them made without any fuss. He makes massive, ambitious original films like Inception and Interstellar, and audiences turn out on a scale normally reserved for superhero movies or the next Transformers sequel. It’s an impressive feat, and it’s no wonder that he’s able to assemble such impressive ensembles in front of the camera. While everyone’s waiting to hear what Nolan will do next, a new video tribute to the filmmaker has landed online that runs through his entire filmography, from his feature debut Following to last year’s Interstellar and everything in between. It’s a serviceable ode to Nolan, and while a few of the cuts are a bit jarring, »

Weekend TV Ratings: A.D., American Odyssey Drop, Last Man On Earth Mixed

The weekend TV ratings for Friday, April 10th through Sunday, April 12th are in; here are some of the highlights: On Friday, Grimm was up a tenth to a 1.1 rating in the key 18-40 demographic, and 4.8 million viewers at 8 p.m. on NBC. The Masters Tournament coverage on CBS will likely affect their ratings once again (as in these numbers are somewhat tentative, plus, their primetime programming was delayed). For now, the inflation looks as such: Madam Secretary at 8 p.m. scored a 1.5 rating and 11.89 viewers, up 36 percent (which seems questionable), while The Good Wife got a bump of 20 percent from last week's series low to a 1.2 rating and 9.16 million viewers at 9 p.m. At 10 p.m., Battle Creek received a 14 percent bump to a 0.8 rating and 6.87 million viewers. New Images from Pan, Magic Mike Xxl, and Vacation

Last week, some new images from a slew of upcoming films were unveiled in the spirit of previewing the impending Summer Movie Season. Today, even more new images have been released from three very interesting—and very different—Warner Bros. films. Director Joe Wright (AtonementHanna) re-envisions the classic J.M. Barrie tale Pan in the action adventure pic, which stars Hugh Jackman as the villainous Blackbeard, Garrett Hedlund as Hook, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, and newcomer Levi Miller as Peter. The film opens in theaters on July 24th. The highly anticipated sequel Magic Mike Xxl finds director Steven Soderbergh steeping back into the roles of cinematographer, camera operator, and editor while Gregory Jacobs takes the helm. Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez, and Gabriel Iglesias reprise their roles and are joined by newcomers Amber Heard, Donald Glover, Elizabeth Banks, and Jada Pinkett Smith. The Bfg: Disney Joins Steven Spielberg’s Adaptation of the Roald Dahl Classic

After months of casting, the official roster for The Bfg is here. The Steven Spielberg-directed adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic will star Mark Rylance as the title character and Ruby Barnhill as Sophie, the young orphan who travels to Giant Country. The film will also feature Penelope Wilton as The Queen, Rebecca Hall as Mary and Bill Hader, Jemaine Clement, Michael David Adamthwaite, Daniel Bacon, Chris Gibbs, Adam Godley, Jonathan Holmes, Paul Moniz de Sa and Olafur Olaffson as giants. [caption id="attachment_222915" align="alignright" width="360"] Image via DreamWorks[/caption] The Walt Disney Studios has also joined the project to co-produce and co-finance, making The Bfg the very first time Spielberg is directing a Disney-branded movie. Creed: First Look at Michael B. Jordan Sparring with Sylvester Stallone

Among the upper echelons of great, ridiculous deaths in film, there is the passing of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), and then there's anything else. When last we saw Apollo breathing, he was getting bashed into oblivion by Dolph Lundgren's merciless Ivan Drago, following one of the most gratuitous pageants of Americana ever to be put to celluloid. For crying out loud, the man came into the ring being announced by James Brown and wore a bejeweled Uncle Sam hat to mark the occasion. One can expect far less glitz and glamour in Creed, the film which unspools the story of Creed's grandson, Adonis (Michael B. Jordan), getting trained by the one and only Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), and Sly took to Instagram today to debut the first photo from the film, showing him and Jordan getting ready to spar in the ring. How To Train Your Dragon TV Series Coming to Netflix in June

Cartoon Network had Dragons: Riders of Berk and Dragons: Defenders of Berk, but now How to Train Your Dragon is moving over to Netflix for a new series. The official Netflix press release makes no mention of Riders of Berk or Defenders of Berk and also stresses that this is an “all-new” series, so the narrative probably won’t have much to do with what went down on the Cartoon Network show, but, Riders of Berk and Defenders of Berk are set in between Httyd and Httyd 2 and it seems likely that the events of this new show will follow the film sequel, so there should be some continuity in that respect. Dragons: Race to the Edge will take Hiccup and Toothless beyond the borders of Berk where they find something called the Dragon Eye, an ancient artifact that helps them discover new lands and never-before-seen dragons.
