El sector manufacturero de Puerto Rico declaró $76,575.0 millones en productos expedidos en el año 2012, lo cual representa una disminución de 4.5 por ciento de los $80,172.0 millones en el 2007, según el Censo Económico de las Áreas Insulares del Negociado del Censo de los Estados Unidos.
El número de establecimientos manufactureros en Puerto Rico en 2012 fue de 1,653, representando una disminución de 23.2 por ciento de los 2,151 establecimientos declarados en el 2007. De manera similar, el número de empleados en el sector manufacturero disminuyó un 24.3 por ciento, de 110,691 en el 2007 a 83,830 en el 2012. La nómina también bajo 16.8 por ciento, de $3,453.4 millones a $2,874.8 millones durante el mismo período.
La manufactura de químicos (NAICS 325) permaneció al frente del subsector manufacturero en Puerto Rico, con un incremento del 64.9 por ciento los productos expedidos en el 2007 al 68.1 por ciento en 2012. El valor de productos químicos expedidos aumentó sólo el 0.1 por ciento, a $52,141.1 millones en el 2012. Sin embargo, el empleo disminuyó un 43.4 por ciento, de 30,841 en el 2007 a 17,466 en el 2012. Esta disminución del empleo estuvo motivada fundamentalmente por un descenso en la producción de la industria farmacéutica y la medicina (NAICS 3254), el mayor de los subsectores dentro del sector de la industria de productos químicos. Este sector sufrió un descenso del empleo de 44.8 por ciento, de 25,550 empleados en 2007 a 14,097 empleados en 2012, en la medida en que el número de establecimientos en esta industria se redujo de 65 a 46.
Como en censos anteriores, San Juan-Carolina estuvo al frente de las áreas estadísticas combinadas de la isla con $69,424.2 millones en expedición de productos de establecimientos manufactureros en 2012, un incremento del 6.7 por ciento con respecto a $65,046.9 millones en 2007.
El Censo Económico quinquenal de las Áreas Insulares ofrece la fuente más completa y de más autoridad de información sobre la economía de Puerto Rico y de otros territorios estadounidenses.
