I'm curious as to how you interpret 2 out of 2 random 1D X bodies having this issue (both ours, and Imaging Resource's) as the 1D X not having this issue, or not being as widespread.

That's not up to us. And just to be clear - we're not making a big issue out of it either.

But you have a 1D X - why don't you try it out for yourself? It was just as easy to replicate on our 1D X as it was on our D750.

In other words, brand-loyal bashers will, well, bash - b/c that's what they like to do. That and call us biased. Nevermind our bias appears to change from day to day, depending on who you speak to. Cuz, yeah, we're fickle like that.

But you can't just view it 'by eye' - you view it only b/c I've positioned the cameras very precisely from shot to shot, then aligned them in Photoshop, then created a rollover for you to see the differences.

No way even I could tell the differences between the cameras until I did precisely that.

The fact that you were able to illustrate the difference and for Nikon to NOW make the "fix" means they skipped the process or did not make that procedure in their manufacturing/assembly and testing process. Perhaps I am expecting too much from Nikon, however, I believe Nikon has at it's disposal design and testing hardware and software for ND Simulation and test.

In my decades of Systems Engineering (complex systems) practice, EVERYBODY communicate with each other. Everything is documented. I won't go into details.

But back to reality. While I feel the "flare" is blown out of proportion, I sadly fear that there will be several who will never be satisfied. Some of those do not even own a D750, nor even any Nikon camera. I do not have the D750, YET!

Very well said, and I agree with your that D750 is SPECed/designed/executed/built upon its STANDARD which is much lower than NIKON's Higher-end/Flagship models.

The root causes is POOR STANDARD by just simply looking the tolerances of these two samples which are FAR from "Precision".

As far as QC, two samples different PDAF results may be not out of D750's QC SPEC, but within. Only NIKON knows.

Japan can reach today's highest quality and productivity in the world b/c we give them the best of the best mind *Edwards Deming* after WW-2.

His "work began in August 1950 at the Hakone Convention Center in Tokyo when Deming delivered a seminal speech on what he called Statistical Product Quality Administration.

Sadly, NOT ONE photographic company in Japan nor any in the world won the W. Edward Deming Award in 2013. Winner for 2014 has not been announced yet but I would be surprise if Nikon and Canon would be in the Winners Circle.

I have about 40 books written by and written on Deming which I distributed (gave) to colleagues and subordinates before retiring 4 years ago.

Edwards Deming comes to my mind b/c" two DPR's D750's AF module placement is *different*" by default/untouched after out of mfc.

Kinda sad that there isn't in-camera automatic AF tuning stuff yet, to take advantage of live-view contrast detection and to work with a chart that could shipped with the camera. It would make everyone happy

Only Nikon knows the ROOT of the root cause of Nikon's "OIL LEAKING" then, and "FLARE" now:

BUT, for the Ford's case, "Deming questioned the company's culture and the way its managers operated.

As seem from Ford's case above, the "root" is much deeper than Requirements/SPECs/Design/Execution/QA/QC/etc.

Blowing this incident out of perspective does no service to those consumers who are willing to purchase a new model when it comes out. And it should be noted that those consumers are the ones who provide the breadth of testing that picks up on bugs not caught before release. In effect they are the beta testers. But blowing the situation out of perspective just results in a new model that then orphans their purchases. So it seems as though positive and constructive conversation ought to be the rule of the day.

The D750 is a stunning piece of Kit.

The fact that it had/has a similar problem to most other DSLRs as shown by DPRs excellent staff got completely blown out of proportion by a few users, many that did not own the camera.

There will be no new model this time, the 600 issue was a supplier problem that tainted a model. The shutter solution should make the resale of D600s better than D610s, they effectively have a lifetime shutter replacement.

I'll also wait for at least 6 months before buying the D750 just in case... I hope D760 has built-in GPS.

...but when DP puts out a list of winning products of there own and require from you to choose the best from the list...is far from being “passionate” or “innocent”! More like manipulative!

@laclx - Phil Askey could not find dedicated or acceptable site on digital camera reviews, thus, he founded Digital Photography Review in England. As you might likely know, Amazon purchased DPReview. The fact that DPR does not censor our post that contradicts DPR means, to me, that we are tolerated to choose our own passionately loved brand.

Hi, I can confirm. My D750 ( S/N 601XXXX) is affected by the "flare" issue, but the AF is 100% correct. And I am a bit worried that it may be not so perfect anymore after Nikon's intervention.

Hard to believe the AF module doesn't sit in precisely the same position in each camera produced?????????

Why don't you just go away. I don't like being called a fan boy. You add nothing but nastiness to the discussion. You add nothing constructive about the cameras. I like the effort that DP Review has made. I hope they keep at it. If Rishi Sanyal comes to my town I hope he will call and we can have lunch and talk cameras.
Comparing products and product cycles of today with those of the 1960's is of no use. Product cycles are so short today comparatively, because of the forward movement of technology, that unanticipated issues are bound to arise. The question is, how do the company's respond to it when it does. Nikon has learned a lot in the past two years.
BTW I notice from your equipment list that you do not own Nikon products, but rather Pentax and Fuji. Why don't you restrict your comments to the equipment you actually know something about.

This is not my experience. I was also using SLR's and I did have a couple of faulty ones. More to the point, the ones that 'worked' were full of 'problems' like this.

At the time we didn't notice so much, but I still use film cameras alongside my digital ones, and it make me realise just how much imaging quality has improved ;-)

I have owned numerous consumer grade digital cameras since 2003 (still do!), I have never had to send one in for repair.

Anybody who believes camera quality was better in the day is suffering from a serious bout of nostalgia!

Call me a Nikon fanboy if you wish because i will buy Nikon over other FF DSLR. I agree that Nikon dropped the ball on the design and perhaps manufacturing of the D600, hence, I return the D600 3 weeks after purchase. My D800 has auto focus problem with one of my four FX lens, so I chalk that as a lens issue but still a Nikkor. While the D750 I had a hands-on was flawless, this article documented some flaws. While I will still buy the D750 when the dust clears, I agree that Nikon needs to do a better job at design, validation, verification, manufacturing and Q/A.

Complexity of the product is not an excuse. Prior to the D600, there were no problems with Nikon high end DSLR, at least not I am aware of. I believe more precise and sensitive test equipment also kept pace with the more complex technology.

Not knowing how Nikon engineer and make their product, I can only wonder if components, other than the Sony Sensor, are not 100% Nikon.

Same old. The key is this: the camera industry should issue formal Technical Service Bulletins as is done in the automotive industry for "professional" models, by which I mean ones over a certain cost threshold.

These are posted online. If your camera is impacted, the repair is free. Next stage, a formal recall system by an industry-wide governing board. Some of the high end models are quite expensive and merit this approach.

Yes. The complexity of the device is not a valid excuse. They should be in control of complexity, otherwise they should hold back and stick to the tested and tried technology.
The cameras of the 70ies, which were (I read) "built like tanks" were themselves greatly more complex than what came before. Yet they most probably exhibited less, not more quality problems then what came before.
I am, in general, tired and disgusted of botched products which look good on paper, then exhibit all kind of surprises. I would rather have something simpler which works as expected and is well thought, tested, reliable and solid.
Yet most producers seem to be terrified (whether justifiably or not) that if they "stick to basics", then they will be quickly outsold, and we consumers end up paying the price for that.
We are experiencing advances in performance, sensors and image quality, but stagnation or even regression in many other things such as build quality and ergonomics. How is that a good thing?

Good points. The high-end DSLR is a pretty refined product. I think the OEMs may be chasing targets that don't need chasing. 56,000 vs. 128,000 ISO. 17 vs 24 FPS. Work on 3 things if anything: dynamic range of the sensor; focus accuracy and POWER CONSUMPTION.

Look at the absurd # of buttons, dials, interface points on these cameras. No one has done the hard work of refining the modern digital camera interface so it is less complex but more powerful.

Rishi - I agree with your [this] article and a good majority of your responses but cannot accept the above. I agree and support Nikon's response of this D750 issue and you have articulated that very well.

I would not be surprise to read a post like the above from a fanboy but not from a DPReview staff.
