“ American Sniper - $304.1 million
American Sniper opened nationwide the day after nominations were announced, and went on to earn a stunning $89.3 million over the three-day weekend. Thanks to strong word-of-mouth, the movie has held incredibly well in subsequent weeks; through the second weekend in February, it had earned $304.1 million, or more than the other seven Best Picture nominees combined. It’s on track to end its run with at least $340 million, which will make it the highest-grossing movie from 2014 (it technically opened in New York and Los Angeles on Christmas Day). ” People: Bradley Cooper
Titles: American Sniper (2014)

“ The Imitation Game - $79.7 million
The old adage “slow and steady wins the race” could apply to The Imitation Game’s box office run thus far: the movie has taken in over $79 million, despite having never earned over $8 million on a single weekend. It’s still holding well, too, and will wind up with at least $90 million total. That’s not quite on par with The King’s Speech, but it’s still very impressive for this modestly-priced World War II drama. ” People: Benedict Cumberbatch

“ The Grand Budapest Hotel - $59.1 million
On the day that nominations were announced, The Grand Budapest Hotel was the highest-grossing among the Best Picture candidates with $59.1 million. The movie opened way back in March – incredibly early for a Best Picture nominee – and was a top choice for adult moviegoers in to the Summer season. Ultimately, Budapest topped The Royal Tenenbaums to become writer/director Wes Anderson’s highest-grossing movie ever (through Tenenbaums still leads when adjusted for ticket price inflation). ” Titles: The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

“ Selma - $48.3 million
The civil rights drama earned a somewhat soft $11.3 million in its first weekend in wide release back in January. It held well the following weekend, though, and had fantastic turnout on Martin Luther King, Jr. day (its biggest single day at $5.1 million). Selma should wind up inching past $50 million total, which is a fine result. ” People: David Oyelowo
Titles: Selma (2014)

“ Birdman - $36.5 million
The satire of our superhero-obsessed movie culture hasn’t exactly done superhero-level business. With a week to go before the Oscars, Birdman has earned a solid $36.5 million; in comparison, Fox Searchlight’s 12 Years a Slave had banked over $49 million through the same point last year. With a DVD/Blu-ray release on the horizon, Birdman should wrap up its run with around $40 million. ” People: Michael Keaton, Edward Norton
Titles: Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)

“ The Theory of Everything - $33.2 million
The Stephen Hawking biopic has out-earned director Jean-Marc Vallee’s Dallas Buyers Club, which took in $27.3 million last year (and was also nominated for Best Picture). With star Eddie Redmayne racking up award wins lately, the movie has held well, though its imminent DVD/Blu-ray release should put the brakes on that. Look for a final total just above $35 million. ” People: Felicity Jones, Eddie Redmayne
Titles: The Theory of Everything (2014)

“ Boyhood - $25.2 million
Long considered a front-runner to win Best Picture, the Richard Linklater drama is actually the second-lowest-grossing movie among the nominees. Still, its distributor IFC’s number two movie all time (behind My Big Fat Greek Wedding), and it has earned more than all three of Linklater’s Before movies combined. ” Titles: Boyhood (2014)

“ Whiplash - $10.4 million
Prior to receiving a Best Picture nomination, Whiplash struggled to succeed outside of arthouse theaters. To some extent, that’s still the case, though it has been holding well in weeks since the nomination. Still, with a DVD/Blu-ray release on the horizon, this could wind up being the lowest-grossing English-language Best Picture nominee since Winter’s Bone ($6.53 million) back in 2010. ” Titles: Whiplash (2014)
