Must See: Watch Teen Actress Amandla Stenberg Expertly Explain What's Wrong with Cultural Appropriation

Comments

Yes, honey.

Three years after making headlines for playing The Hunger Games cutie Rue, 16-year-old actress Amandla Stenberg is in the news again. And this time, she's taking a stand against cultural appropriation.

For a history class project, Stenberg made a video—"Don't Cash Crop on my Cornrows"—in which she condemns White America's overtaking of Black culture.

"Pop stars and icons adopted Black culture as a way of being edgy and gaining attention," she said in the video, juxtaposing images of Alicia Keys' cornrows circa 2002 with White pop singer Katy Perry's cornrows that she sported in a recent video. "What would America be like if it loved Black people as much as it loves Black culture?"

Take a look at the video and tell us what you think about this teen's powerful project.
