Yes, I know some of these films have scathing reviews, but there a lot of films that I find that have been negatively received that I feel have been completely misjudged (e.g. Transcendence) So, yes, I fully expect a number of these films to be dreadful, but I'm still going to watch these films with an open mind.
Likewise, there are a number of films in this list that I am still yet to see that have critical acclaim so expect this list to change through time.
Awards films that are released before Jan 1st in the UK will count on the list, those that are released next year may feature on next years' list. Likewise, this list does feature some films that were part of last years' Awards films and so feature in this list.
Generally, I feel that 2013 was a better year for film and the top 5 films were pretty much perfect, with the entirety of this list, each film does suffer problems and there is no perfect film this year. But what differs 2013 to 2014 is originality - this year in film has been particularly original and there have been a lot of ambitious films. Whilst they may not all have pulled it off, you have to admire them for their ambitions.
