Opening This Week - April 17

Certificate PG   -   Action | Comedy

After six years of keeping our malls safe, Paul Blart has earned a well-deserved vacation. He heads to Vegas with his teenage daughter before she heads off to college. But safety never takes a holiday and when duty calls, Blart answers.

The Buzz: Kevin James got a Segway in 2009 and rode that thing to the top of the box office and stayed around until his movie Paul Blart: Mall Cop earned an absurd amount of money - nearly $150 million in the U.S. (though the comedy didn't really connect outside the States). You might say James's career is in a mild state of flux since he recently made a deal to potentially return to series television, and it's not a stretch to indicate that his next projects - be they in TV or movies - could be on how Blart performs a second time around. The story idea feels lazy; perhaps that doesn't matter one bit, though. Finally, it's hard to say how the movie might play in a semi-crowded season; you can't necessarily make a direct comparison to the original since it was released in January and lacked for competition.

Certificate R   -   Horror | Thriller

A group of online chat room friends find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force using the account of their dead friend.

The Buzz: Unfriended will either continue producer Jason Blum's reign of modestly budgeted terror or prove that you really can't use Internet chatter as a gauge for potential box-office success. What bums us out about the movie: take away its vengeful spirit and the rest of the story is a nightmare that happens to teenagers all the time now.

Certificate R   -   Drama | Thriller

A disgraced member of the military police investigates a series of nasty child murders during the Stalin-era Soviet Union.

The Buzz: We thought for sure that director Daniel Espinoza would sign on for a major TV project or a big-budget action movie after his U.S. breakthrough, Safe House (which is three years old already, yow). We'll follow Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman anywhere, and we were mostly into Hardy and Noomi Rapace's dynamic in The Drop. But … child murders? Eesh. We're still with you all, albeit hesitantly. Nice to see Espinoza reunited with Joel Kinnaman, who did his best to make Run All Night worthwhile. If Child 44 doesn't connect, it won't be because its cast was unappealing.

Certificate G   -   Documentary

A nature documentary that follows a newborn monkey and its mother as they struggle to survive within the competitive social hierarchy of the Temple Troop, a dynamic group of monkeys who live in ancient ruins found deep in the storied jungles of South Asia.

The Buzz: Nature documentarians Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield found their style with Planet Earth and essentially they've just repeated it with their follow up projects - first Chimpanzee and now Monkey Kingdom/. We aren't in any rush for them to change their style.

Certificate R   -   Drama | Mystery | Thriller

Metascore: 62/100 (6 reviews)
When disgraced New York Times reporter Michael Finkel meets accused killer Christian Longo - who has taken on Finkel's identity - his investigation morphs into a game of cat-and-mouse.

The Buzz: One man's horrific unraveling is another man's career reinvention, and it's green director Rupert Goold's task to make it all entertaining. If you haven't read the source material (Michael Finkel's memoir, which Goold adapted), it does more for its author than its audience, ultimately. We're not going to look for answers in the movie; we're just wondering how James Franco and Jonah Hill are going to approach their characters since they (Longo and Finkel) are both alienating people.

Certificate R   -   Drama

A workaholic attorney is forced to reinvent her life after her husband suddenly leaves.

The Buzz: The great reviews for Mary Elizabeth Winstead lead performance, combined with the potential interest in Chris Messina as a first-time director, could help Alex of Winter find an audience. Apparently Don Johnson has notched another memorable role, too.

Certificate R   -   Thriller

A high-rolling corporate shark and his impoverished young guide play the most dangerous game during a hunting trip in the Mojave Desert.

The Buzz: From the look and sound of things, this Jean-Baptiste Léonetti's Mojave Desert-set thriller is a backdrop for a Jeremy Irvine skin show and little else. This line from this review has stayed with me for days: "If all a movie needed was a boy with abs and a gun (or slingshot), then Beyond the Reach would be a masterpiece."

Certificate R   -   Drama | Family | Romance

In Félix and Meira, an unusual romance blossoms between two lost souls who inhabit the same neighborhood but vastly different worlds.

The Buzz: I haven't felt this ambivalent about a cult-movie sequel since The Descent: Part 2.

Certificate R   -   Action

After his tribe is slaughtered through an act of treachery, the teenage son of a slain Maori chieftain looks to avenge his father's murder and bring peace and honor to the souls of his loved ones.
