How Disability Data are Collected
Disability tends to vary across surveys, both due to differences in the definition of disability and the methodologies used to collect the data. The primary source for Census Bureau disability data comes from the American Community Survey (ACS) and the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). Disability data are also available in the Current Population Survey (CPS), a joint Census Bureau-Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) survey. The CPS Annual Social and Economic Supplement (CPS ASEC) collects a data on a separate definition: work disability. Lastly, the Census 2000 still provides the most recently estimates of disability for geographies with populations less than 20,000. The following describes how disability is defined and collected in each survey:
- The American Community Survey (ACS)
- The Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP)
- The Current Population Survey (CPS)
- The Decennial Census of Population and Housing
