TV Review: ‘Game of Thrones,’ Season 5

19 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

With apologies to a sci-fi classic, the fifth season of “Game of Thrones” could easily be subtitled “When Worlds Collide.” Having spent four magnificent campaigns establishing various constituencies with claims to the Iron Throne, four previewed episodes connect several of them in fascinating ways, while continuing to add new faces to an already sprawling cast. Operating on a scale like nothing else on TV, and creatively liberated to play a long game stretching into the future, perhaps no project better distinguishes HBO’s status as the leading premium player than David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ meticulous adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world.

Always a bit slow starting (relatively speaking, anyway), the new season of “Thrones” has a lot of cleaning up to do. After all, Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) escaped a death sentence and took flight with the eunuch Varys (Conleth Hill), producing no end of wonderful exchanges between the two of them. »

On the morning of March 31, Richard Lovett, newly arrived in Santa Fe, N.M., for a set visit, called his Creative Artists Agency partner Bryan Lourd, who was in New York dealing with a family illness. He had bad news: Five agents, whose clients include Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell and Melissa McCarthy, had just messengered their resignations and defected to United Talent Agency. None of them had informed Lovett or Lourd directly. "It was such a betrayal on a personal level," says one agency source. That

The Twin Peaks Cast Just Won’t Let David Lynch Go Quietly

18 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Twin Peaks premiered 25 years ago today, and the cast just won't let you forget it. Recently, news broke that David Lynch has exited the show's planned third season, leaving Showtime's Twin Peaks revival somewhat in limbo. Now some of the show's cast members — including Sheryl Lee, Dana Ashbrook, Mädchen Amick, and more — have put together a sweet tribute to their beloved director to remind us (but mostly Showtime) why the show just can't go on without him. Also, the cast wants to make sure Showtime doesn't call it Twin Peaks 2: Triplet Peaks because that would be dumb. »

If you've watched one of Rob Lowe's ads for DirecTV, then you're well aware that the handsome actor subscribes to the satellite service provider while his alter-egos—and less cool counterparts such as "Peaked In High School Rob Lowe"—have cable.  The commercials, while amusing, have now been pulled following a complaint from cable giant Comcast, a direct competitor of DirecTV, which questioned the accuracy of the campaign's claims, reports the L.A. Times.  On Tuesday, the National Advertising Division, a branch of the Council of Better Business Bureaus which reviews ads for truthfulness and accuracy, recommended that DirecTV pull the popular ads and reportedly »

Pivot Renews First Scripted Drama ‘Fortitude’ for Season 2

Just in time for its freshman finale, “Fortitude” has been picked up for a second season.

Pivot and Sky Atlantic announced the Season 2 renewal Thursday.

The psychological thriller, starring Stanley Tucci, is the first-ever scripted drama for Pivot, Participant Media’s television network.

The first season told the story of a small-town rocked by a violent clime. Set in the Arctic town of Fortitude, the series follows the community, as suspicion grows after a brutal and shocking murder, and warmer-than-average temperatures cause the ice to melt, revealing secrets, which have long been hidden under the frozen ground.

“From the first episode, audiences responded to the incredibly rich world Simon Donald created, where nature and civilization collide with catastrophic results,” said Kent Rees, general manager of Pivot. “We’re excited to announce that ‘Fortitude’ will be back for another season of suspense and chaos.”

China’s State Broadcaster Appoints New Media Integrator as President

China Central Television, the state-run broadcasting giant, has appointed a computer technician as its new president.

Nie Chenxi was announced this week as successor to Hu Zhanfan, who “was removed from the post due to his age.” The announcement was made at a ceremony and confirmed on the website of the State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (Sapprft).

Hu held the post of president since 2011, a period in which CCTV has been rocked by the exposure of multiple scandals – many of them dating back long before his appointment.

“Nie, with good political qualities, ideas and faith, strong leadership and coordination as well as moral integrity, is a fit person for the post,” said Sapprft in a statement.

Nie, 58, has next to no experience in journalism and is the first of CCTV’s 11 presidents not to come from an editorial background.

Chris Pratt establishes his dominance in new 'Jurassic World' clip

Well, the early speculation/rumors turned out to be correct, as this new clip from "Jurassic World," which just made its debut on MTV, demonstrates. Chris Pratt's character in the film is indeed able to lead the raptors, and that means we're going to see a scene where he leads them in against other dinosaurs and just typing that makes me feel like I'm nine years old because Holy Cow That Sounds Awesome. Basically, that's the mood I hope Colin Trevorrow is able to strike with the entire film. He was a little kid when he saw "Jurassic Park," and now he's making his own film set in that same world. He's been handed the toys to play with, and now we'll see if he can take that excitement he felt when he sat in that theater and if he can translate it to an experience that will turn »

No joke: Vin Diesel, Chris Tucker set for Ang Lee's 'Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk'

Vin Diesel is jumping back into the prestige movie world.  And, yes, that's "back."  Diesel has made his name in the "Fast and Furious" and Riddick franchises, but many forget he actually has a Steven Spielberg movie on his resume ("Saving Private Ryan").  He also starred in the cult drama "Boiler Room" and voiced the title character in the classic animated film "The Iron Giant."  What many have already forgotten, however, is that Diesel earned the best reviews of his career in Sidney Lumet's 2006 courtroom drama "Find Me Guilty."  Now, Diesel is getting serious again by teaming up with another cinematic master, Ang Lee. According to Deadline, Lee has cast Diesel and Chris Tucker to star in his adaptation of Ben Fountain's novel "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk."  The drama focuses on a group of American soldiers, including Lynn, who are being celebrated for their heroism during the Iraq War. »

MTV Movie Awards: Channing Tatum & Chris Pratt neck-and-neck for Best Comedic Performance

Will his luck finally improve? MTV Movie Awards predictions: 'Hunger Games' & 'Guardians of the Galaxy' divide users Marcus Dixon, Matt Noble and I say Pratt will prevail.
