The Episode | “The Deal” (April 6)

The Performance | We’ve long thought that one of the marvels of Farmiga’s gloriously unhinged work as Bates Motel’s Mommie Dearest is that she’s always, always acting on (at least!) two levels. And never was that stunning duality on better display than in this week’s episode.

TV Shows are Becoming the New Film Franchise, and That's a Very, Very Bad Thing

6 hours ago | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Last weekend, the seventh entry in the "Fast & Furious" franchise earned a record-breaking $143 million in three days. Not only is this a heaping ton of cash, but most franchises lucky enough to reach six or more entries start to see a downward trend in dollars soon after, if not even earlier. They don't typically surpass past entries by leaps and bounds — or, to speak in the language of Vin Diesel's movies — by so many cars falling out of so many planes and jumping through so many buildings. In fact, only 19 popular film series have made it to seven or more films — discounting "franchises" like Marvel movies (which is a studio backing many franchises) or all-encompassing labels like "National Lampoon." And only 10 of those don't fall into the bountifully repetitive horror genre. Of those 10, only four were still earning more with their seventh film than the films preceding it. The point being, »

Disney/ABC TV Group Digital Chief Albert Cheng to Exit

16 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Albert Cheng is stepping down from his post as Disney/ABC Television Group’s top digital exec.

Cheng, exec VP and chief product officer of digital media for Disney/ABC TV Group, has been the architect of Disney/ABC’s digital initiatives for more than a decade. In a note to staffers, Cheng said he felt it was time to move on after achieving the goals of making Disney/ABC programming available on an array of digital platforms.

Noting ABC’s path-breaking decision to offer Web streaming of series back in 2006, Cheng observed: “We were streaming video before streaming became cool.” He also cited ABC’s partnership with Apple to include a video-streaming app in tandem with the launch of the iPad in 2010.

Cheng was tapped for the role of Disney/ABC TV’s digital media czar 10 years ago by then-Disney/ABC Group chief Anne Sweeney as it became clear »

Below, he tells Indiewire about what, exactly, a "PG-15" rating means, what Joss Whedon taught him about making genre TV work for the masses, and whether — in the mix of discussion about the other Marvel series which will follow "Daredevil" — if he was planning for Season 2.  I just want to start...
