Vacuum Tube Collection

Basic theory of a vacuum tube - a large electron beam shoots through the vacuum tube. This intensity of the electron beam is controlled by a much smaller charge, hence amplification.

Thanks. I placed the tubes on the backside of a rubber floor mat that I curved upwards behind the tubes. I had to wash some dirt off the mat, then dry the mat because the water left shiny spots.

The main light was a lamp placed directly over top of the tubes pointing straight down. This lamp had a single incandescent light bulb. It also had and an opaque lamp shade which kept the light directional and let me keep a dark background.

The purple light came from a small LED flashlight pointing from the side.

To get a sharp clean image I set iso100 and f11. I had to use a tripod to get the 6s shutter speed. I focused with manual focus using live view zoomed in and depth of field preview button on. I set the camera for mirror lockup, and a 2s delay timer.

It took me about 2 hours & 20 pictures to get it just the way i liked.

I wish i had metered a -1/3 stop to lower the highlight intensity a tad. I also should have rotated the image a degree or two counterclockwise. I also don't like the shadow/purple in the backrground on the left side.

Thanks! The tall tubes are a specialized vacuum tube called a Thyratron.

Congratulations... This along with the other top photo's was more of what I was expecting. This looked like fun to create. Thank you for entering this entry int he challenge.

Interesting looking tubes. I've never seen one with the anode connection so fragile, projecting up that way. It almost looks like the tubes were designed by an artist, not an engineer. Love the lighting.
