Education

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) works on a smart, skilled and creative Netherlands. OCW encourages people to pursue a good education, experience culture and prepare themselves on independence and responsibility.

Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba

On Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba the first order of business is to eliminate the disadvantages in educational performance. Apart from that the first steps have been taken for structural improvement of education and schools.

Catch-up program learning disadvantages

Language skills and math tests have been given to students of groups 6 and 7 of the lower grades of secondary education. Based on the results the teachers determined which students require extra attention and what material they will need to that end. That material has been made available.

Structural improvement

Based on the report of the Dutch education inspectorate (December 2008) the following priority points for structural improvement of the education and schools in Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba were proposed in consultation with the island governments, school governing boards and school executive boards:

  • catch up program language skills and math
  • new teaching methods
  • free books and teaching material (such as teaching methods, readers, dictionaries, maps etc.)
  • schooling of teachers, school leaders and school boards
  • strengthening of student care
  • improvement of school housing
