Field trials Finland has not seen many applications for field trials with genetically modified plants. Of a total of 22 trials, only one took place in 2004 (potato), and one in 2005 (birch). No new field trials have been registered in 2006. Commercial cultivation Although Finland generally votes in favour of approvals for GM plants at the EU level, commercial cultivation of GMOs has never taken place in the country. This is likely due to the fact that the GM crops approved for cultivation in the EU are not suited to Finland’s climatic and soil conditions.
