'Metal Gear Solid' Movie Brings in 'Monsters 2' Writer

British screenwriter Jay Basu has signed on to write the screenplay for Sony Pictures' video game adaptation Metal Gear Solid. We reported back in June that filmmaker Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) has come aboard to direct, but that was the last we heard about the project. The studio's production president Michael De Luca is overseeing the adaptation.

The original video game, created by Hideo Kojima, launched in 1998 for the original Playstation console. The game follows a solider known as Solid Snake, who breaks into a nuclear weapons compound to stop a terrorist threat by a rogue special forces unit known as Foxhound. Solid Snake's mission is to rescue two hostages, the head of the Defense Advanced Research Projects (Darpa) and president of a major arms manufacturer, while stopping the terrorists from launching nuclear weapons. There have been 10 games that have spawned from the original Metal Gear Solid.

'True Story' Clip Features James Franco and Jonah Hill

Journalist Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill) meets the accused killer, Christian Longo (James Franco) in the first clip from True Story, arriving in theaters April 17 from Fox Searchlight Pictures. While any meeting between a journalist and an accused killer would probably be rather tense, it is even more warranted in this clip, since Finkel is meeting the man who literally stole his identity, which he used while he was living outside of the U.S. After he is arrested for killing his wife, Longo reveals that the only person he will talk to is Finkel.

Before these events in this true story adaptation took place, Finkel was forced to leave the New York Times in disgrace, after he was caught falsifying accounts of impoverished teenagers in West Africa. Just one week later, the New York Times was embroiled in yet another plagiarism scandal involving reporter Jayson Blair. The plot follows Michael Finkel »

The CW Network has added yet another actor to its Arrow / Flash Spinoff cast, bringing aboard Doctor Who star Arthur Darvill to play DC Comics character Rip Hunter. We reported earlier this month that the spinoff will feature three characters from the DC Comics who have never been featured on a TV show before, with Rip Hunter being the second of these mystery roles to be cast. Here's the description of his character, previously known as "The Traveler," from this month's earlier report.

"Described as a "Han Solo-esque rogue who gets by with his charm, this hero hails from the future, and has journeyed back in time on a secret mission. His razor-sharp wit hides the pain of a man who has lived through serious conflict. He also harbors many secrets, always leaving both his teammates and the audience unsure of his true allegiances."

New 'Star Trek' TV Series in Development at CBS?

Over the weekend, Latino Review reported that CBS is looking to develop a new Star Trek TV series, with Bryan Singer rumored to executive produce through his Bat Hat Harry production company. You may recall that Bryan Singer was also part of a team that pitched a series entitled Star Trek Federation 10 years ago, along with Robert Meyer Burnett and Christopher McQuarrie, with Geoffrey Thorne writing the script. This report alleges that this Star Trek Federation team is all back for the new series, but it seems that may not be the case.

io9 reached out to Robert Meyer Burnett, who said he knows nothing about a new Star Trek TV series for CBS. Of course, that doesn't mean it isn't happening, but if it is, the project is going forward without him. Here's what he had to say below.

"All of the Federation information is true...but we did that Ten Years Ago. »

Also opening on that day are the boxing drama Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and The Gift, which marks the directorial debut of Joel Edgerton. Both Southpaw and Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation released trailers last week to much praise.

'Black Panther': Will Andy Serkis Return as Ulysses Klaw?

Back in February, it was finally confirmed that Andy Serkis' mystery role in Avengers: Age of Ultron is in fact the Marvel comic book character Ulysses Klaw, after he briefly appeared in the first two trailers. It was never known how large a role the actor has in this Phase Two sequel, but he revealed at the Empire Awards that he only has a cameo appearance. Here's what he had to say, adding that Joss Whedon is a lot of fun to work with.

"It was really minimal. It's a tiny role, a little cameo role. But I just loved doing it and it's a great character. Joss is just great fun to work with."

Ulysses Klaw's appearance in the second trailer was just one of several hints that Avengers: Age of Ultron could be setting up their upcoming Black Panther movie, which is slated for release on July 6, 2018. In the comic books, »

'Arrow'/'Flash' Spinoff Casts 'Pippin' Star as Hawkgirl

Rising star Ciara Renee has signed on to play Kendra Saunders, a.k.a. Hawkgirl in The CW's Arrow/Flash Spinoff. Earlier this month, we reported that the series will introduce three characters from the DC Comics who have never been seen on TV before. One of these characters was known as the "Female Warrior," described as, "a twentysomething Latina who is pretty but unassuming, book smart and socially awkward by day." The character becomes a "fierce warrior" by night, to the extent, "that sometimes she can become a threat to others." Hawkgirl was previously featured on Smallville and in the animated series Justice League, so this character might not be the "Female Warrior" in question. Though it should be noted that the Smallville version of the character was Kenrda's Aunt Shayera Hall.

Deadline speculates that the previously-confirmed Caity Lotz may play the Female Warrior, since her Arrow character Sara Lance, »

'Tron 3' Gets Titled 'Tron: Ascension'?

Earlier this month, we reported that Disney's Tron 3 is set to start shooting this fall, with Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski confirmed to be back at the helm for this long-awaited follow-up. Today, Production Weekly is reporting that the sequel is now titled Tron: Ascension, with production scheduled to begin in Vancouver this October 2015 to February 2016. Disney has not confirmed the title or the production schedule at this time, but Production Weekly was the first to reveal the Terminator Genisys title for the first time back in December 2013, so it's certainly possible that Tron: Ascension is the actual title.

Garrett Hedlund, who played Sam Flynn in Tron: Legacy, is the only actor currently confirmed for Tron: Ascension at this time. With production said to begin later this year, hopefully we'll start hearing about whether or not Tron: Legacy cast members Jeff Bridges (Kevin Flynn), Olivia Wilde (Quorra) or Bruce Boxleitner »

'X-Men: Apocalypse' Concept Art Confirms Mutant Angel

With shooting scheduled to begin next month in Montreal on X-Men: Apocalypse, director Bryan Singer took to his Instagram page to reveal a new piece of production artwork, which confirms that the mutant Warren Worthington III, a.k.a. Angel, will be featured in the sequel. The image appears to show Angel locked in a cage at some sort of a circus, but it isn't known how this image will fit into the story line. It's worth noting that we haven't heard who is playing Angel yet, but we reported last month that actor Ben Hardy has signed on to play an important yet undisclosed character from the Marvel comics, so it's possible that he could be playing Angel.
