6 Career Paths Jon Hamm Should Consider After 'Mad Men'

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Read More: Review: The Final 'Mad Men' Season Premiere Asks If Don, or Anyone, Can Ever Be Happy The ending of AMC's critically-acclaimed series "Mad Men" has been kept tightly under wraps, with the early reviews revealing very little in regard to plot and characterization, as is the standard. It's what we've come to expect from creator Matthew Weiner, whose drama of epic subtlety — its quiet intrigue often screams volumes more than even the likes of a more brutally upfront show like "Breaking Bad" — comes to an end beginning with the Season 7b premiere on April 5. The fate of "Mad Men" and its dashing, beautifully fleshed out characters may be unknown, but what about its leading man? Jon Hamm has had an amazingly twisted run as the show's brilliant ad man/self-destructive womanizer Don Draper. In a recent GQ feature, the actor, now 44, talks about his thoughts on »

New Images From 'Terminator: Genisys' Arrive From The Future

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

One of the biggest movies arriving this summer is "Terminator: Genisys," but it's also the one that has the most course correcting to do when it comes to marketing. The first trailers and images haven't done a great job of selling the movie as the sequel/reboot/do-over that we all need to see, and it isn't helped by Arnold Schwarzenegger lumbering around as an aged Terminator. Anyway, a few new images have arrived, and they don't have us any more or less excited than we already were, which wasn't much. So, here's a Terminator driving a truck, Sarah Connor pointing a gun, and J.K. Simmons staring at Arnie and thinking, "Wtf, did I really agree to take a role in this movie?" With Arnie already talking about appearing in the inevitable sequel, it looks like this won't be the last he says, "I'll be back." But will audiences? »

Disney Bans Smoking In Lucasfilm, Marvel & Pixar Films; Can't Market 'Rogue One' Until 'Rogue Nation' Is Released

3 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The more valuable a tentpole property is, the more rules you have to play by, not only to protect the brand, but also to make sure it reaches as many people as possible. And as Disney knows, it's young people who have the most disposable income, so they want to makes sure their movies reach those impressionable minds with few barriers. The Wrap reports that during a shareholder meeting last week, CEO Bob Iger revealed that the company's on screen smoking ban was now being extended to pretty much every shingle under their umbrella — Lucasfilm, Marvel, and Pixar. “We are extending our policy to prohibit smoking in movies across the board: Marvel, Lucas, Pixar and Disney films,” he said. The only exception will be when "we are depicting a historical figure who may have smoked at the time,” and that means real people, not Marvel characters. This will be a »

New Directors/New Films Review: Jia Zhang-ke Produced 'K' Is A New Take On Franz Kafka's 'The Castle'

4 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Franz Kafka is to film what lightning is to a bottle: many filmmakers try to capture him, but few succeed. Courageous men like Michael Haneke and Aleksey Balabanov have attempted the feat of translating Kafka's final work, “The Castle,” into the medium of cinema, only to end up with a square peg in a round hole. Now, we have a couple of new brave souls. Darhad Erdenibulag and Emyr ap Richard are co-directors from Inner Mongolia, who have chosen to tackle the labyrinthine world of bureaucratic abyss in Kafka's seminal novel as their sophomore feature. A supreme undertaking, and a valiant effort, ultimately, “K” is a resounding failure and a butterfingered attempt to capture the essence of a literary genius. For those unfamiliar with Kafka's work: firstly, I must implore you not to watch Erdenibulag and Richard's interpretation as an introduction. Secondly, the plot is wonderfully basic at its core. »

Review: 'House of Cards' Season 3 Episode 7 'Chapter 33' Starts Over

4 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Episode 6 Review: 'House of Cards' Season 3 Episode 6 'Chapter 32' Breaks Up a Marriage Morning BriefingIt's all okay again! After Episode 6's catastrophic falling out between Frank and Claire, the two patched things up over the course of a month in their time and an episode in ours. Ending chronologically with a renewal of vows that kicked off the sequential events of the episode (written by Beau Willimon), "Chapter 33" attempted to dig into the First Family's unique relationship but came away with as much inside information as Thomas Yates has discovered thus far: bupkis. Though many superficial changes were made — from Claire's hair color to the time-jumping construction — we're essentially right back where we started before the season began, and it doesn't feel earned. The disruption of Frank and Claire as President and U.N. Ambassador was one ripe with possibilities, and up to this point, it really felt »

Russo Brothers Lock Down Deal To Direct 'Avengers: Infinity War'

5 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

They haven't even shot a frame of "Captain America: Civil War," but it looks like Joe and Anthony Russo have their schedule for the next few years mapped out. The pair are already tipped to direct that bro-tacular "Ghostbusters" spinoff/reboot with Channing Tatum over at Sony, but it seems they aren't done with Marvel yet. The long running rumor that the siblings will helm the two-part "Avengers: Infinity War" just inched closer to confimration, with Badass Digest reporting that their sources tell them "the Russos closed their deal" to direct both movies. The plan will be for both to shoot back-to-back in 2016 and 2017, but there's no word yet if that Ghostbusters gig, tentatively slated for a 2017 release, will also be squeezed in during that timeframe. The directors recently signed a deal at Sony, so presumably they have to live up to their obligations as such. While there's nothing official on this from Marvel, »

One on One: Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “Love & Basketball” and “Beyond the Lights”

5 hours ago | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Beyond the Lights“Cupid draw back your bow…And let your arrow go…Straight to my lover’s heart…for me…nobody but me…”Love is easily definable when refracted through the lens of Hollywood cinema or a great pop song like Sam Cooke’s “Cupid.” A couple meet-cute, their attraction grows, heartache eventually rears its ugly head, then epiphany strikes and one person does everything they can to get the other back. It’s a rigged game of sorts; togetherness is almost always guaranteed once things fades to black. The studios are so good at reducing complex emotional experiences into easily digestible packages that one tends to forget the messiness of romance, the time it takes to develop, and the confusion it brings to a person’s life. “Happily ever after” tends to earn more at the box office than “it’s complicated.”Instead of reinforcing this mainstream narrative, »

So Much For That Mystique Movie? Jennifer Lawrence Says 'Apocalypse' Will Be Her Last X-Men Movie

5 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

No doubt we've heard certain sweeping statements from other actors before. There was a time when Robert Downey Jr. was talking big about walking away from Marvel, and same goes for Chris Evans. Now Jennifer Lawrence is the latest to claim that she'll be hanging up the latex and bodypaint. Chatting with MTV, the actress revealed that "X-Men: Apocalypse" will be her last foray into the world of mutants. “It is my last one, actually,” adding with a short but affirmative “yes.” This might come as a blow to  20th Century Fox executives who last spring expressed a desire to launch a bunch of spinoff X-movies, including one for Mystique. But should everyone really start freaking out? Nah —it's likely that her contract is expiring. This is what Nicholas Hoult said about the future of the Beast earlier this month. "This is the last one I'm signed up for," the actor told E! »

While Corden and executive producers Rob Crabbe and Ben Winston weren't able to reveal much about their plans for the launch of CBS' new late night entry, they were able to reveal what will hopefully help them stand out in the current crowded landscape and what America can expect from this unknown new presence. A Happy Hour That Includes a Cocktail Hour One element that should help contribute to the idea of creating a congenial atmosphere: A full bar on stage. Memo to Distributors: Buy These 10 SXSW 2015 Movies

'White God' Director on Unleashing 250 Dogs on Budapest and Why More Films Should Take Risks

You have never seen a dog movie like "White God," the singular cinematic effort that won Cannes's top prize in the Un Certain Regard section last year. With echoes as disparate as "Lassie," "The Birds," and "Amores Perros," Kornél Mundruczó's genre-bending fable imagines a world in which marginalized stray dogs uprise against their cruel human oppressors.  When 13-year-old Lili is sent to stay with her emotionally distant father in Budapest, she brings along her other half: a soft-hearted but rambunctious rescue dog, Hagen. But the reality that meets them is unwelcoming and indifferent to their bond. "Mutts have to be reported in Hungary,"a neighbor admonishes, and proceeds to call the police. Lili must send Hagen back to the streets. What ensues is an Odyssean journey that exposes Hagen to darkest impulses of humanity.  Incredibly shot without the aid of CGI, Mundruczó and his team unleashed »

The Best Films Of The 2015 SXSW Film Festival

The queso and BBQ gorging are done, and so it's a wrap on the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, which featured a mix of mainstream releases, smaller indie narratives, documentaries and music-based films, among many others. Our two correspondents Charlie Schmidlin and Drew Taylor have comprised their best-of highlights from the festival. The Audience Award winners are here, and the regular award winners decided by the SXSW Jury are listed here. See you in 2016! Charlie Schmidlin Experiencing amazing Alamo Drafthouse bumpers, built-up queues for events and anything but vegetables as a culinary option, my first time at SXSW was the best kind of ordeal. The fest was staffed by a charming, friendly staff and volunteers who organized the programming down to a science —I don’t think I attended one delayed screening the entire time. I can’t wait to go back next year —maybe after a salad first. 1. “Krisha” A wall »
