EU: Second generation of GM soybeans close to authorisation
The EU Council of Agricultural Ministers was not able to come to a decision on the authorisation of the GM RoundupReady2 soybean. EU Commission will give the green light for the import of this new soybean.

USA: Guidance on the regulation of genetically modified animals
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued guidance for the regulation of genetically engineered animals and products derived from them. The public was invited to give its opinion on the draft up to 18 November.

French speed up GMO authorisation
The EU Council of Agricultural Ministers is due to vote on the authorisation of RoundupReady2 soybeans at their next session on 18 November. France, which currently holds the Presidency of the EU Council, added the authorisation of the GM soybeans to the agenda.

New debates on the safety of GM maize
A long-term feed study on mice delivered yesterday at a conference in Vienna once again brought up the debate on the safety of GM maize. Individual laboratory mice, fed a certain type of GM maize, had fewer offspring. Scientists warned of jumping to conclusions.

In Australia, an application for the limited and controlled release of clover genetically modified to resist infection by the alfalfa mosaic virus has been submitted to the national Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR).

EFSA: ban on cultivating MON810 maize in France is unfounded
The current ban in France on the cultivation of MON810 maize is not scientifically justified. This was the conclusion reached by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) after carrying out further evaluations on the maize at the request of the EU Commission.
