Shonda Rhimes (and Everyone Else) Hated That Deadline Story on Diversity

19 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

It takes a special kind of person to look at the success of shows like Empire, black-ish, and Fresh Off the Boat as something to fear, but that's just what Deadline did last night, in a story that asked, "Ethnic Castings — About Time, or Too Much of Good Thing?" As the site's TV editor Nellie Andreeva argued, the industry's recent shift toward more diverse casting, which has generally been regarded as a long-overdue step in the right direction, is actually unfair to white actors, who have found themselves passed over for quality roles this pilot season. As expected, Twitter treated Andreeva's post with the appropriate amount of scorn, as showrunners, actors, critics, and viewers all stepped up to express their displeasure with her prose. Here are some of the reactions: »

Bradley Cooper in Talks to Direct Warner Bros.' 'A Star Is Born' Remake

20 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Bradley Cooper is in talks to direct Warner Bros.' remake of 1937 musical "A Star Is Born," which would make this his first feature. Cooper, along with Jon Peters, Bill Gerber and Basil Iwanyk, will also produce this version of William A. Wellman's Oscar-nominated Tinseltown tale of aging movie star Norman Maine who ushers a hopeful young starlet's rise to fame while grappling with alcoholism and the near-end of his career. The film has already been remade twice: first in 1954 with Judy Garland, who was in the hospital during her notorious Oscar snub, and in 1976 with Barbra Streisand. Clint Eastwood was attached to this latest remake back in 2011, with Beyonce Knowles in talks to play Esther Blodgett. That fell through and Eastwood shifted to another musical, "Jersey Boys." According to THR, Cooper is shopping several projects to direct for Warner Bros. In 2014 he and "Hangover" director Todd Phillips signed a three-picture, »

Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young Is a Long Anticlimax

33 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

In While We’re Young, writer-director Noah Baumbach gets hold of a good satirical premise and does halfway well by it, maybe even two-thirds. His protagonists are sad 40-somethings Josh (Ben Stiller) and Cornelia (Naomi Watts), who can’t have kids and grow increasingly alienated from their child-centric friends, but who meet a pair of 20-something hipsters, Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried), and discover an exhilarating new design for living. Josh and Cornelia are dimly aware — especially at first — of how ridiculous they look trailing breathlessly behind flaky kids 20 years their junior. But they’re invigorated by the company and elated by the sudden sense of what’s possible. For much of the film, the often-bilious Baumbach stakes his claim on the wobbly-but-fertile border between mockery and sympathy. He seems to have found his inner Paul Mazursky, the satirist who can poke fun at his characters’ foolish self-delusions »

Naomi Watts on Her 3 Toughest Scenes in While We’re Young

38 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

In the past three years, Naomi Watts has played such varied roles as Princess Diana (Diana), a mom injured and separated from her family by the 2004 tsunami (The Impossible), a neurotic actress making her Broadway debut (Birdman), and a pregnant Russian stripper-prostitute (St. Vincent). Her latest movie offers more proof of her seemingly unlimited range: In Noah Baumbach’s comedy While We’re Young, she co-stars with Ben Stiller as half of a 40-something married couple who befriend a pair of 20-something Bushwick hipsters (Amanda Seyfried and Adam Driver). Watts moves fluidly between playing the straight woman to a manic Stiller and battling her own character’s midlife crisis. She and Baumbach explain what they were thinking during the making of her three most memorable scenes. *******Tripping Cornelia (Watts) and Josh (Stiller) attend an ayahuasca ceremony, where they drink a hallucinogenic stew. London — The BBC has not ruled out a return for Jeremy Clarkson, who was sacked as the presenter of hit auto show “Top Gear” yesterday.

Speaking on the BBC’s “Newsnight,” the broadcaster’s creative director Alan Yentob said he could not rule out Clarkson working again for the network at some point.

“Of course I wouldn’t rule that out, but that’s not for now,” he said.

Yentob added that the show’s future was now in the hands of Kim Shillinglaw, the head of BBC Two, the channel on which the show airs, and the show’s exec producer, Andy Wilman.

“The question of what happens next for ‘Top Gear’ is a conversation which must go on between the controller of BBC Two Kim Shillinglaw, between Andy, and the team,” Yentob said.

For Clarkson, his troubles are far from over. The police have started their own investigation »

Chelsea Handler Claims Cosby Tried to ‘Cosby’ Her

2 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

In an Esquire interview, Chelsea Handler revealed that Bill Cosby might have had plans to ‘Cosby’ her, as she put it. Handler said that roughly a decade ago the two were doing stand-up in Atlantic City and were staying at the same hotel. During some down time, Cosby asked one of the hospitality staffers to fetch her because the now-embattled comedian wanted to meet with her in his suite. "I said, That's really weird. I don't want to go alone. I go, I don't know him. So the three guys I was with — thank God these guys were with me. ... I brought them up with me to his room and thank God I did, because now I know what would've happened if I went up there alone," she recalled. One of her friends, who was with her at the time, texted her recently: "Do you remember that night we »

For what it's worth, you can still donate to the project over the course of the next 30 days if you want to vie for the remaining perks (digital download, advance screening, and beerfest, among others) and help make the movie "more amazing." »

SEC Ruling Changes Game for Hollywood Film Financing

The rules for movie financing were radically redrawn Wednesday by a landmark Securities and Exchange Commission ruling that opens the door for online investments in start-up businesses  by the majority of Americans. Studios, independent filmmakers, talent and movie fans could all be impacted by the long-awaited approval of a key provision of President Obama’s 2012 Jumpstart Our Business Startups (Jobs) Act, which allows new companies to solicit investments — not donations, as has been the case with film-funding companies like KickStarter and Indiegogo — from virtually anyone. The new regulations also clear the way for what has been called an “Ipo Lite, »

Mariel Hemingway Says Woody Allen Tried to Seduce Her at 18

In her forthcoming memoir, Out Came the Sun, Mariel Hemingway claims Woody Allen tried to coax her into joining him for a romantic getaway in Paris. The two had worked together on Allen's Manhattan when the actress was a minor. After she turned 18, Hemingway says the 44-year-old director flew to her parents' home in Idaho with the invitation. "Our relationship was platonic, but I started to see that he had a kind of crush on me, though I dismissed it as the kind of thing that seemed to happen any time middle-aged men got around young women," Hemingway writes, according to a book excerpt obtained by Fox News. Although Hemingway told her parents she was unsure of the room and sleeping arrangements, her parents encouraged her to go.Hemingway vetoed both parties after she awoke in the middle of the night "with the certain knowledge" she was being duped into »

Pre-credit sequence. We begin at Nagarote, as I try to remember where we left off and what the names of the tribes were. Shirin is sad to have been blindsided and to have lost Max. "I don't know that I can trust you," Carolyn tells Shirin, further shunting her aside. Shirin protests that Max made her isolate herself, but Carolyn is being rough, making it clear that she wants no part of the newly solitary Shirin. "Is anybody left in this game willing to play with me?" Shirin ponders, wondering if this is a reflection on her. Hali levels with Shirin and tells her that Max had been annoying and that people felt like she was annoying as well. Ouch. This hits home for Shirin, who grew up rich, but not popular. So sad.
