The Buzz: Early reactions to the movie that brings together Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart have called it surprisingly lowbrow -- a few have already gone on record to say it's their least favorite Will Ferrell movie. If it turns out to be mainly a script issue, I'll be surprised, since it comes from Jay Martel and Ian Roberts, who are part of the writing crew who keep "Key and Peele" so on point.
Home (2015)
Oh, an alien on the run from his own people, lands on Earth and makes friends with the adventurous Tip, who is on a quest of her own.
Director:Tim Johnson |

The Buzz: Rihanna is one of our favorite celebrities, though we feel like any project that tries to compete with the worldwide appeal of her Instagram account is fighting an uphill battle. Critical reaction - sighting a thorough lack of originality -- has been harsh, but the movie opened well in its first international weekend, so let's see how kids and parents react in the U.S..
While We're Young (2014) - [Limited]
A middle-aged couple's career and marriage are overturned when a disarming young couple enters their lives.
Director:Noah Baumbach |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Noah Baumbach's fine return to form with Frances Ha has most likely set a high bar for his new project to meet in terms of audience reaction. Frances was a singularly unique character who danced around the cliches of her subgenre -- something that doesn't seem to be apparent with While We're Young. Baumbach and Ben Stiller pretty much struck out with Greenberg, so I was surprised to see them reunite and attempt a variation on the same theme: mid-life paralysis. I'm biased, though, because this photo from the movie has been bugging me for weeks.
Serena (2014) - [Limited]
In Depression-era North Carolina, the future of George Pemberton's timber empire becomes complicated when he marries Serena.
Director:Susanne Bier |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: So much has been said about Serena's quality, it's hard not to pre-set expectations before seeing the movie. It would be wonderful to see Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper give unedited feedback on the project and its critics.
The Salt of the Earth (2014) - [Limited]
For the last 40 years, the photographer Sebastião Salgado has been travelling through the continents, in the footsteps of an ever-changing humanity. He has witnessed some of the major events of our recent history; international conflicts, starvation and exodus. He is now embarking on the discovery of pristine territories, of wild fauna and flora, and of grandiose landscapes as part of a huge photographic project which is a tribute to the planet's beauty.

The Buzz: Remember how Seth Rogen unsuccessfully tried to hold a pot-friendly screening of The Interview in Denver? He should try again with this documentary.
The Riot Club (2014) - [Limited]
Two first-year students at Oxford University join the infamous Riot Club, where reputations can be made or destroyed over the course of a single evening.
Director:Lone Scherfig |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: The Riot Club looks trashy in a way that probably has Bravo! scrambling to secure cable rights to the newest movie from An Education director Lone Scherfig.
Fehér isten (2014) - [Limited]
Thirteen-year-old Lili fights to protect her dog Hagen. She is devastated when her father eventually sets Hagen free on the streets. Still innocently believing love can conquer any difficulty, Lili sets out to find her dog and save him.
Director:Kornél Mundruczó |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: A double-award winner at Cannes -- including a victory in the quirky Palm Dog category -- there has been plenty of discussion on the effectiveness found in Kornel Mundruczo's allegory.
Man from Reno (2014) - [Limited]- Mystery | Thriller
A mystery outside of San Francisco brings together small-town sheriff Paul Del Moral, Japanese author Aki Akahori, and a traveler from Reno who soon disappears, leaving behind his suitcase and a trail of questions.
Director:Dave Boyle |
|

The Buzz: Nice to see this Indie Spirit nominee earn a robust theatrical release. Ayako Fujitani has a cult audience from her trio of Gamera movies, and the story's Hitchcockian appeal/San Francisco setting could attract arthouse devotees too.
Cupcakes (2013) - [Limited]- Comedy | Music
In Tel Aviv, six friends who are appalled by the Israeli entry in the UniverSong competition record their own song on a mobile phone, then are shocked to learn their recording is selected as Israel's entry for next year's competition.
Director:Eytan Fox |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Writer/director Eytan Fox usually connects better with audiences with his dramas, and we're surprised this crowdpleaser wasn't released closer to the annual Eurovision contest in May, but we wouldn't be surprised if Cupcakes finds a sustaining audience this spring.
