Life Inside Jabba the Hutt

Mar 09, 2015 | 167-part series
Video by Jamie Benning

"Jabba the Hutt is possibly the most expensive puppet that's ever been made," says Toby Philpott, a puppeteer who brought the Star Wars villain to life in Return of the Jedi. Filmmaker Jamie Benning interviews Philpot in this documentary, which weaves vintage behind-the-scenes footage with memories of the cramped, difficult animatronic work. Philpot crowded into the latex puppet with two other men; one operated its left side, one operated its right side, and a third controlled its slug-like tail.
