  1. Criminology and War

    Transgressing the Borders
Edited by Sandra Walklate, Ross McGarry

It is widely observed that the study of war has been paid limited attention within criminology. This is intellectually curious given that acts of war have occurred persistently throughout history and perpetuate criminal acts, victimisation and human rights violations on a scale unprecedented with domestic levels of crime. However, there are authoritative voices within criminology who have been studying war from the borders... Read more...

  2. The Routledge Handbook of Qualitative Criminology

Edited by Heith Copes, J. Mitchell Miller

Despite illustrious origins dating to the 1920s, qualitative crime research has long been overshadowed by quantitative inquiry. After decades of limited use, there has been a notable resurgence in crime ethnography, naturalistic inquiry, and related forms of fieldwork addressing crime and related social control efforts. The Routledge Handbook of Qualitative Criminology signals this momentum as the first major reference work dedicated to crime ethnography and related fieldwork orientations... Read more...

  1. Recommended by CHOICE Reviews - Voices from American Prisons

'Heretofore, 'voices' from US prisons were usually angry men (white and black) who had axes to grind with whomever they blamed for their imprisonment. It is, therefore, refreshing to see in this small volume by sociologist Stern (Harvard) not angry voices, but rather uplifting, spiritual, and deeply thoughtful words examining the humanity of men and women locked up inside of the many prisons across the US... The author's epilogue explains that education programs alone will not end the inhumanity of punishment, nor will it end mass incarceration. Stern is an advocate of the Project Half initiative, which she believes can offer cost-effective policies that will eventually end both incarceration and recidivism... Especially for graduate students in sociology, criminology and social work, and criminal justice professionals working to rehabilitate prisoners. Summing Up: Recommended' - Earl Smith, Professor Emeritus of Sociology,Wake Forest University, Choice Reviews, January 2015

  2. Highly Recommended by CHOICE Reviews - Gun Crime in Global Contexts

'Synthesizing five communities of academic interpretation in the gun proliferation and violence debate - criminology of gun violence, conflict studies of failed states, studies of weapon proliferation or trade, ethnography of violence and peacemaking, and the inter/national politics of gun control - Squires concludes that the metaphor of the authoritarian Western game of chance - rock, paper, scissors - may be used to illustrate the concept of the separation of unequal powers in liberal democracies that permit the hegemony of the powerful gun lobby, despite overwhelming evidence that the gun is a defective product that does more harm than good to the social contract...Highly recommended.' - Onwubiko Agozino, Professor of Sociology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, CHOICE Reviews, January 2015.
