Nearly 400 companies and organizations have signed a brief of amici curiae to a US Supreme Court case arguing for marriage equality for same-sex couples.

The court will debate two questions: one, whether states must allow same-sex marriages within the state, and two, whether states must recognize same-sex marriages carried out in other states.

The court will hear arguments on April 28 for the case, Obergefell v. Hodges. The initial suit was filed on behalf of James Obergefell, a man who legally married his longtime partner, John Arthur, in Maryland and then returned to their home in Ohio. When Arthur died in 2013, Obergefell was not recognized as a surviving spouse because his marriage was not valid in Ohio.

On March 5, a brief was filed (pdf) on behalf of 379 companies arguing that discriminatory laws against same sex couples are unfair as well as complicated and expensive.

The signatories include Silicon Valley corporations such as Apple, Google, and Facebook; financial firms such as Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and Morgan Stanley; other large corporations such as General Electric, Nike, Disney, and Coca-Cola; and a number of smaller firms, companies, and advocacy groups.
