Production started last week on the new CBS series Supergirl, with the network releasing the first official photos on Friday featuring star Melissa Benoist in her full Supergirl costume. Today, The Live Feed reports that Malina Weissman has been cast as a young Kara Zor-El. The actress will guest star in the pilot episode, confirming speculation that the DC Comics series will flash back to her childhood years. She most recently appeared on the big screen as a younger version of Megan Fox's April O'Neil in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

What isn't known at this time is if the young Kara will be on Earth or on her home planet of Krypton. Kara was born on Krypton but was sent to Earth before her home planet was destroyed. Malina Weissman to play young Supergirl

9 March 2015 12:06 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

After news of Helen Slater (the original Supergirl) and Dean Cain’s (The New Adventures of Lois and Clark) involvement in the new CBS show Supergirl, as well as last week’s official reveal of Melissa Benoist (Whiplash) in her Supergirl costume, word has broke about who will play Kara Zor-El in her formative years.

Malina Weissman, best known to audiences from playing young April O’Neill in last year’s Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, will play the child version of Karain the show.

Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. After arriving on Earth, Kara was taken in by a foster family who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers. Benoist will portray Kara from around the age of 24, while Weissman will presumably be seen in flashbacks exploring the character’s early years. »

How Supergirl can avoid its predecessors’ pitfalls

9 March 2015 11:32 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

From tone to costume to powers to sidekicks to villains to love interests, here are a few tips for CBS' forthcoming Supergirl series...

It's official – Supergirl is coming to television next season.

We have an actress, a costume and an ever-growing list of characters being brought in from the comics and, at a time when female superheroes are still suspiciously absent from the slate of big film releases, executive producer Greg Berlanti and his team are expanding their television empire to include Kara Zor-El in addition to the already-successful Arrow and The Flash series.

But this show will be on a different network – CBS rather than The CW – and that’s not the only detail to suggest this will be a completely different series with new rules and, quite possibly, a new universe not connected to Oliver Queen and Barry Allen’s.

In so many ways, this is completely fresh territory, »

First Look at Melissa Benoist as "Supergirl" Fits the Mold in a Good Way

9 March 2015 9:53 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I either didn't know or just very quickly forgot CBS was bringing DC Comics hero Supergirl to the small screen, though such news comes as no surprise even as these first-look pictures of Melissa Benoist ("Glee") in "Supergirl" began making the rounds over the weekend. After all, CBS co-owns The CW with Warner Bros., a studio that seems to be employing the "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" strategy in attempt to catch up with the competition over at Marvel. However, The CW currently plays host to "Arrow" and "The Flash", both of which are quite widely acclaimed, so it makes sense for Warners to add a female super into its small screen stable, especially considering it likely desires to put the "Wonder Woman" fiasco of just a few short years ago far, far in its rearview mirror (sorry for bringing it up again). Supergirl Casts Malina Weissman as Young Kara

9 March 2015 8:26 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Supergirl has already found the woman that will play Kara with series star Melissa Benoist, and now, the CBS superhero drama has found the girl that will also play the infamous DC Comics character. Malina Weissman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) has been cast to play young Kara in Supergirl. The Hollywood Reporter first revealed the casting news Weissman, who played the young version of Megan Fox’s April O’Neil in 2014’s Ninja Turtles reboot, will guest star in the Supergirl pilot as a younger version of Kara. This news confirms what many have speculated: that Supergirl will indeed show flashbacks to Kara’s childhood, before she becomes the 24-year-old-woman that the series will follow. It is unknown if we will see more flashbacks to Kara’s younger years as Supergirl‘s first season continues; as of right now, Weissman is only singed on to appear in the show’s pilot episode. »

Weissman Cast As A Young "Supergirl"

9 March 2015 7:58 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Malina Weissman will play the younger child version of Kara Zor-El in CBS' upcoming series adaptation of the DC Comics heroine "Supergirl".

Melissa Benoist plays a 24-year-old Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. After arriving on Earth, Kara was taken in by a foster family who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers.

Weissman is expected to appear in flashbacks to the character's early years as a child. Weissman certainly has experience in this kind of role, playing the younger version of Megan Fox's April O'Neil in last year's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" reboot.

Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg will pen the script and executive produce the drama.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Actress To Play Young Supergirl In CBS Series

The actress who played a younger version of April O'Neil (Megan Fox) in last year's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot has now joined the cast of Supergirl as Kara Zor-El. Melissa Benoist is obviously playing the current day take on the character in the TV show, so this means we will likely revisit Kara's early days when she arrived on Earth and started to discover her powers. Supergirl focuses on Superman's cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. After arriving on Earth, Kara was taken in by a foster family, the Danvers, who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers. First Look: Melissa Benoist As TV's 'Supergirl'

9 March 2015 7:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

DC Comics' first major kick at Supergirl can came in 1984 with the feature length film that is hardly remembered fondly. It has taken the company over thirty years to reintroduce the character to the big or small screen in a major way, but that all changes with CBS' "Supergirl," and the first look has now arrived. Melissa Benoist ("Glee") puts on the uniform for this new attempt at the superhero, and according to three time Oscar winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, the idea is to bring Linda Danvers into the contemporary age. “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today,” she said. To me, it just looks like they took the design from "Man Of Steel" and retrofitted it for the needs of the television show. But overall, it evokes the classic look and it works. »

First Images Of TV's New Supergirl

8 March 2015 10:05 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

With Melissa Benoist in place as the lead and a quickly growing assortment of actors filling out the ensemble around her, the Supergirl pilot has begun to move… well, faster than a speeding bullet. Production has kicked off on the new show and, to avoid on-set spies getting an awkwardly-lit first look at Benoist in her suit, the producers have put out the initial imagery. Designed by Oscar winner and costume veteran Colleen Atwood (who works regularly with Tim Burton and crafted the looks for DC’s other main superhero shows, Arrow and The Flash), it’s a modern, stylish take on the traditional look for the character that also borrows a little of the texture of Man Of Steel’s version of the suit. "In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today," Atwood said in a statement. »

Supergirl: costume revealed for new TV show

7 March 2015 1:34 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Here’s our first look at Melissa Benoist as TV’s Supergirl, in costume and everything…

These last few weeks have seen the Supergirl TV show really come together, with casting announcements for the lead, her boss, her hunky friend and even her potentially-villainous next-door neighbour, amongst others.

Dean Cain of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman and Helen Slater of the classic Supergirl series have also been cast, with their roles remaining a mystery. We wouldn't expect them to be insignificant parts, either.

Now, though, we have arguably the most exciting nugget of news yet – the costume reveal. A good or naff costume can make or break a screen superhero (although Grant Gustin was quick to win over those who disliked his Flash costume), but we’re happy to report that Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl costume is pretty darn good….

It’s a mix of classic charm and modern grittiness, »

Melissa Benoist’s ‘Supergirl’ Revealed

6 March 2015 11:30 PM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

After the casting revelations of recent weeks, it’s now time for CBS to finally unveil the heroine of their new series Supergirl. We knew Melissa Benoist was the choice to bring DC Comics character Kara Danvers/Kara Zor-El to a new generation, but what’s she going to look like when she’s suited up…?

The answer to that question is right here…

Designed by Colleen Atwood, the end result is simple and rather retro in nature. The texture reflects more recent takes on the Super costume, but overall this is decidedly old school.

As the pilot goes before cameras, let’s run down what we know about the forthcoming series. The action centres on The Man Of Steel’s cousin Kara as she leaves Krypton and settles on Earth, working at the CatCo media empire under the formidable Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart).
