The project cost 20 trillion rials (about $800 million), according to the Fars News Agency. The first section of Line 3, with a length of 7 kilometers, came on stream in December 2012. Line 3 of the Tehran Metro will extend 37 kilometers when it is completed, connecting the metropolitan area’s far south and far north, and will be the longest subway line in the Middle East. The Tehran Metro has four operational lines, stretching for a total of about 152 kilometers. The subway has 85 stations so far. Currently, the Tehran Metro carries more than 3 million passengers per day. In February 2013, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Qalibaf said the Municipality plans to increase the number of passengers to 10 million per day by 2018.
