Tapioca

Description of product

Tapioca is an agglutinated starch that is derived from manioc tubers (also known as cassava) and is traded as a granulate.

  • The EU imports 3.6 million tonnes of tapioca per year, mainly from Thailand.

Application

  • Tapioca is almost exclusively processed into mixed feed.
  • However, it is also found occasionally as a spezial starch in some food products, such as tapioca pudding.

Possible application of gene technology

Manioc is handled extensively within the framework of agrarian research. Gene-technological processes are applied in order to provide the plant with new characteristics. However, these projects remain in an early stage of development.

  • The cultivation of genetically modified manioc as raw material for tapioca starch cannot be expected in the short term

Labelling: Tapioca starch derived from genetically modified manioc would be subject to labelling.
