TV Ratings: 'Hawaii Five-0,' 'Last Man Standing' lead Friday split

Fast National ratings for Friday, February 27, 2015. With "Shark Tank" and "Blue Bloods" in repeats, it was up to "Last Man Standing" to carry ABC to its normal Friday win among young viewers, leaving "Hawaii Five-0" to lead CBS to its normal Friday win overall. After a soft premiere on Wednesday, "Amazing Race" returned to its Friday home and did roughly the same lowish numbers it was doing in the fall, though "Hawaii Five-0" fell among young viewers with its weakened non-"Undercover Boss" lead-in. Without "Undercover Boss," both "Last Man Standing" and "Cristela" got small upticks. On to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, ABC averaged a 1.2 rating for Friday night, tops in the key demographic. Dave Annable Lands Male Lead in NBC Medical Drama ‘Heart Matters’

Dave Annable has been cast as the male lead in NBC’s medical drama “Heart Matters,” Variety has learned.
Annable, who recently starred in “Red Band Society” and previously “Brothers & Sisters,” will co-star opposite Melissa George, who was cast earlier this week in the lead role. He will play her boyfriend.
The medical soap, inspired by the life experiences of Dr. Kathy Magliato, follows a talented female heart transplant surgeon, Alex Panttiere, played by George, who balances her work with the complications of her romantic and personal life.
Jill Gordon penned the pilot. “Private Practice” star Amy Brenneman will exec produce with Gordon and Brad Silberling. Susan Carlson, Eric Carlson, Kelly Meyer and Dr. Magliato will serve as co-exec producers. Robbie Duncan McNeill will direct the pilot. Universal Television is the studio.
Annable is repped by CAA and manager Sue Leibman of Barking Dog Entertainment.

Last night's Glee suffered from a touch of the Ruby Problem, a syndrome I invented while watching a particularly unfortunate storyline unfold in the final season of Parenthood. Like Glee, Parenthood had a short final season with (presumably) a reduced budget. To compensate, Parenthood gave one of its secondary characters a troubled teenage daughter and a beleaguered ex-wife, and then spent an awful lot of the season exploring their story. It's not that Ruby's story was bad, or that the performers involved in it weren't talented (on the contrary, Ray Romano and Jeanne Tripplehorn were both incredible). Madam Secretary‘s Elizabeth McCord is always one cool politico, no matter what tricky feat of international diplomacy is demanded of her. But those behind the scenes of CBS’ Sunday-night drama admit that its Season 2 pickup last month provided a welcome respite from the nerve-racking renwal waiting game.
“It was a big relief to get it early,” executive producer Lori McCreary says with a laugh.

Kim Raver, of “24” and “Grey’s Anatomy” fame, will star in ABC drama pilot “The Advocate.”
Raver plays tough-as-nails business woman Francis “Frankie” Reese. After a dangerous misdiagnosis, her character experiences first-hand the hazards of the U.S. health-care system. She leaves her successful career behind unexpectedly after the medical scare to become an advocate for those lost in the same ever-changing system.
Written by Sheldon Turner and directed by Michael M. Robin, “The Advocate” was inspired by the real story of former talent agent Byrdie Lifson-Pompan, who collaborated with doctor and health education specialist Valerie Ulene to launch a health-care consulting firm.
Turner and Jennifer Klein are exec producing, with Lifson-Pompan and Ulene serving as consulting producers.
Raver recently reprised her role as Audrey Boudreau in “24: Live Another Day.”

“Madam Secretary,” which returns on Sunday on CBS after a brief hiatus, has made a mark for what it isn’t — a tick-tock thriller or dark serialized drama that is part of the current wave of D.C.-set shows.
The show stars Tea Leoni as a CIA analyst who is unexpectedly nominated to the top role at the State Department.
Executive producers Barbara Hall and Lori McCreary tell Variety‘s “PopPolitics” on SiriusXM that the show avoids polarization — even though it has featured very-close-to-reality storylines about negotiations over Iran’s nuclear capabilities and the standoff over the Texas border with Mexico.
“Certainly there is an aspirational aspect to the show that this is the way we would like to think the way things could be resolved, because we do want to stay within the realm of reality and we do want to invite people into the process,” Hall says. »

“Lost” veteran Terry O’Quinn is returning to his old stomping grounds.
The actor will star on the ABC drama pilot “The Adversaries.” O’Quinn will play Charlie, the patriarch of a famous New York law firm, who becomes embroiled in his own legal troubles. His estranged daughter, Jess, is forced to lead his defense team.
“The Lost” alum has starred on ABC’s short-lived “666 Park Avenue” and Fox’s “Gang Related,” in addition to appearing on “Hawaii Five-0″ and “Falling Skies.”
“ER’s” David Zabe will pen the pilot and serve as exec producer, while Stephen Cragg will direct.

“Scrubs” alumna Sarah Chalke has landed another comedy.
Chalke will star opposite Rob Riggle in the Fox family comedy pilot “48 Hours ‘Til Monday,” our sister site TVLine reports.
The actress, who currently has a recurring role on Rainn Wilson’s crime dramedy “Backstrom,” will play Kelly Bishop, Riggle’s wife and mother to their three children. Her character struggles with the realities of being a stay-at-home mom after quitting her job as a TV news producer, while Riggle plays Charlie — a man desperate to make the best of his weekends.
Jane Curtin, as Kelly’s chain-smoking mother Louise, and Merrin Dungey, as her frenemy Candace, round out the cast.
The series from Universal Television comes from “The Mindy Project’s” Charlie Grandy, who wrote the pilot and will also serve as exec producer with Peter Traugott and Rachel Kaplan (“Manhattan Love Story”).

Anthony Mason, Former New York Knicks Player, Dies at 48

Anthony Mason, a longtime NBA star who played for the New York Knicks from 1991 to 1996, died early Saturday morning, Espn reports. He was 48.
The 13-year NBA veteran, who played for six teams, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure earlier this month and underwent multiple heart surgeries.
“First I want to thank all those who offered prayers and well-wishes for my Father, our family really appreciates it,” his son, Anthony Mason Jr., told Espn on Saturday. “Overnight, New York City and the world lost a legend, a friend, a brother … but more than anything our father, Anthony Mason. As you all would expect our father — Big Mase — put up an incredible fight, dealing with a severe heart issue. I’m wishing this was something else I was writing, but Pops we’ve got to let you know we love you and know you’ll always be with us.”
