The Buzz: Recently, Will Smith has been refreshingly candid about After Earth's box-office failure and its effects on his psyche, so we're a bit concerned with how Focus might perform since, frankly, its marketing campaign was lackluster and confusing. Between Smith's appeal and newly minted celebrity, Ray Subers at Box Office Mojo feels it should technically open to $60+ million like a standard Smith movie, but even he's unsure. We just don't know if the hook has been effectively cast out for this story of ex-lovers and double-crossing con artists. Smith might consider re-upping his appeal by -- I don't know -- cracking a joke once in a while on his otherwise serious and self-help-y Twitter.
The Lazarus Effect (2015)
A group of medical students discover a way to bring dead patients back to life.
Director:David Gelb |

The Buzz: Jiro Dreams of Sushi director David Gelb takes a payday with this retro-sounding thriller. Here's what IMDb's Michelle Nelson has to say about it: "This kind of looks like a creepy cross between Flatliners and Pet Cemetery, but I was intrigued by the trailer. I am not usually drawn to horror films but the biggest appeal for me is the cast, including Olivia Wilde, Evan Peters, and Mark Duplass. I will definitely check this one out."
Maps to the Stars (2014) - [Limited]

The Buzz:
In the wake of Hot Tub Time Machine's cannonball at the box office, maybe John Cusack will get to further thumb his nose at Hollywood if David Cronenberg's latest connects in limited release. Here's what Box Office Mojo's Ray Suber's has to say about Maps to the Stars:
Cronenberg's last two movies didn't really click for me: A Dangerous Method never quite kicked in to gear, while Cosmopolis was a full on bore. When Maps to the Stars first premiered back at last year's Cannes Film Festival, it was described as a companion piece of sorts to Cosmopolis, which suggested it may be similarly vexing.
As the dust settled and the movie's release approached, though, it found its way back on my radar. Why? First, reviews are quite strong - it currently has a 72 rating on Metacritic, which is significantly higher than Cosmopolis' 58 rating. Also, the marketing material has mostly connected for me: Julianne Moore looks like she's in peak form (she received a Golden Globe nomination), and Cronenberg seems to have put together a truly unique (and unsettling) Hollywood satire.
With the Oscar contenders exiting theaters in late February, Maps to the Stars should be a strong choice for moviegoers looking for something different than the usual studio fare.

The Buzz: Jack O'Connell might have missed out on an Oscar nomination for Unbroken but really he's received even stronger reviews for his work in this Belfast-set thriller from director Yann Demange. We have our eye on O'Connell's next project, Tulip Fever, which has one of the most swoon-worthy casts in some time.
The Hunting Ground (2015) - [Limited]- Documentary
An expose of rape crimes on U.S. college campuses, their institutional cover-ups, and the devastating toll they take on students and their families.
Director:Kirby Dick |

The Buzz: The prevailing critique -- many say the filmmaking itself is a bit uneven and cluttered -- does not undermine the power and importance of Kirby Dick's latest documentary.
A la mala (2015) - [Limited]- Comedy
When aspiring actress Maria Laura's best friend begs her to flirt with her boyfriend to test his fidelity, Maria finds a lucrative new career. After being hired by women across the city, Maria is given a gig that should be business as usual until she ends up falling head over heels for her latest mark.
Director:Pedro Pablo Ibarra |

The Buzz: Director Pedro Pablo Ibarra's last movie, Pulling Strings, did better at the box office than your standard indie release, so his latest is getting an equally strong push with star Aislinn Derbez front and center.
Everly (2014) - [Limited]
An action/thriller centered on a woman who faces down assassins sent by her ex, a mob boss, while holed up in her apartment.
Director:Joe Lynch |

The Buzz: We love that genre director Joe Lynch (Knights of Badassdom) gets the chance to introduce his sensibilities to a slightly larger audience with Salma Hayek as his gun-toting, apartment-cleaning muse. We what love just as much: the movie's screenwriter has hand a hand in such TV shows as "Parenthood".
The Salvation (2014) - [Limited]
In 1870s America, a peaceful American settler kills his family's murderer which unleashes the fury of a notorious gang leader. His cowardly fellow townspeople then betray him, forcing him to hunt down the outlaws alone.
Director:Kristian Levring |

The Buzz: In an alternate world, this Western could be a TV mini-series, but we're just happy to see Mads Mikkelsen given the opportunity to play an American settler. Meanwhile, one of our movie wishes has come true: all we really want is the chance to see Eva Green bring her singular wildness to the big screen every few months or so.
My Life Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (2014) - [Limited]
Liv Corfixen documents her husband, filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn, during the production and release of his movie Only God Forgives (2013).
Director:Liv Corfixen |

The Buzz: There's a moment in this trailer where the Refn family rolls up to what I sense is a rainy-night premiere for Only God Forgives and Nicolas Winding Refn is majorly stressed out/disappointed, only to have one of his kids tell him that it's not the end of the world - it's just a film. Refn's perspective on OGF's relative failure when compared to Drive's success is the kind of openness that allows you to feel a welcome connection to an artist; there's a sense that he was much more concerned about the film's reception than its box-office performance, and that's one of many reasons we want to follow his wife Lola's Hearts of Darkness-like descent into her husband's creative crisis.
