Watch: Albert Maysles on The Beales

1 hour ago | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

Last Friday, a day after Albert Maysles’ passing, Grey Gardens opened for a 40th Anniversary run at New York’s Film Forum. The new 2K digital restoration of the 1976 documentary, courtesy of Janus Films, will roll out in limited cities over the next couple of months, and the Criterion Collection has released a brief interview with Maysles on his working relationship with the Beales, in which he speaks about the women’s setbacks and their fascinating — not to be confused with abnormal — qualities. For reminiscences on Maysles and his work, I’d recommend this piece by Richard Brody, which speaks to the undying […] »

'They Alive, Damnit!': How the Unbelievably Catchy 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' Theme Song Came To Be

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Read More: Review: 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' Takes The Charms of '30 Rock' To a Darker Place on Netflix If you did any bingeing of Netflix's new Tina Fey-created comedy this weekend, you might have found yourself especially struck by the show's addictive theme song. A blend of gospel passion and a bystander's commentary on watching Kimmy and her fellow Mole Women emerge from the bunker they'd been trapped inside, it's a perfect encapsulation of the show's premise and tone. As Indiewire's Ben Travers put it: And here's why you can't escape it -- it got some help from people who became famous for making music designed to catch fire and spread globally: Viral video pioneers, the Gregory Brothers.  Debuting originally in 2009 as a YouTube channel called Auto-Tune the News, the musical brothers (and sister-in-law) developed a knack for combining pre-existing footage with music, using auto-tune to make everyone from »

The 20 Most Anticipated Films Of The 2015 SXSW Film Festival

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

If it's March, and you suddenly find film Twitter clogged with mentions of low budget, offbeat cannibal horror films and throw-downs over the best barbecue rub recipes, it can only signal one thing: the imminent arrival of the SXSW Film Festival. The Austin-based multi-platform event (which incorporates an interactive and a music festival too) gets bigger year-on-year but has made it a point of pride to remain involved in developing and promoting new and emerging indie talent and championing off-the-wall, midnight madness-style genre flicks, while also becoming the somewhat unlikely testing ground for big studio comedies. All those impulses are in full force this year, and so in advance of packing our intrepid reporters off Texas-ward on Friday, we took a look into the program and came up with the twenty titles we're most excited about. "6 Years" Synopsis: A pair of twentysomethings who have known each other since childhood and been romantically involved for six. »

'The Walking Dead' Prequel Series Grabs Two Season Order from AMC

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Though once a scrappy young originals department, AMC has quickly turned into a major player; meaning, it's got not just one franchise but two. On the heels of its "Breaking Bad" prequel, the cable network has just given the formal go-ahead for another prequel series, this one based on "The Walking Dead." So eager is the studio to capitalize on the massive success of its new flagship program, they've even given the new series a two-season commitment right out of the gate. Plans have been in development for some time now, with news breaking of the networks scheme back in late 2013. The first season of the spinoff — which was titled "Cobalt" during the pilot process — will consist of six episodes, just as "The Walking Dead" did for its initial run. AMC has slated it for a "late summer" debut with Season 2 to air sometime in 2016. Read More: The Most Shocking »

Joel Kinnaman Says 'RoboCop' Should've Been R-Rated, Is Not A Fan Of Terrence Malick's "Detached" Shooting Style

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Joel Kinnaman is an actor who has seemed to be perpetually on the cusp, but hasn't quite broken through just yet. He's got another shot this coming weekend in "Run All Night" opposite Liam Neeson, and he's bagged a key role in "Suicide Squad" coming next year. But before either of those films, Kinnaman had another shot at stardom in last year's ill-advised "RoboCop" remake and he's pretty clear about why it didn't work. "I thought that Jose Padilha had a really interesting vision for that. But, then, at the same time, when doing these kind of comic book, these beloved characters, you also have to be really aware of what about it the fans love so much. And you have to understand that and sort of build your new idea on that," he told Uproxx. "What we did wrong on 'RoboCop,' we just did something new and »

Read More: Watch: 'Game of Thrones' Season 5 HD Trailer is Out...Need You Know More? "Lannister. Baratheon. Stark. Tyrell. They're all just spokes on a wheel," says Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in this new trailer for Season 5 of "Game of Thrones." Truly, in this time of upheaval, the famed houses will battle one another until until one rises to the top and the others either fall into obedience or are wiped out. It looks like Daenerys' best strategy, then, is to wait it out in the east while the other families kill each other. But as she says, she's not going to stop the wheel, she's going to break it. From the looks of this second trailer, however, she seems to have quite a few problems of her own. Other notable appearances in this trailer is the introduction of Oberyn Martell's bastard daughters, The Sand Snakes, one of »

Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg, And Bruce Willis Starring In Woody Allen's Next Movie

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We would've thought that Woody Allen's venture into streaming with his series at Amazon might've stopped his one-movie-per-year streak in 2016. We were wrong. The director is already putting together his next feature, and as always, the stars are lining up. "Adventureland" duo Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart, who recently teamed up again on the forthcoming "American Ultra," are once again joining forces for Allen's next flick. Also aboard is Bruce Willis. As always, the plot, title, and story details are being kept under wraps. It will be Eisenberg's second time working with Allen (following "To Rome With Love"), but Stewart and Willis' first go round working with the legend. That's all the info for now. Allen's next flick "Irrational Man" starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone opens on July 24th. [Deadline] »

Will You Pay $14.99/Month? HBO Teams With Apple For HBO Now, Launches With New 'Game Of Thrones' Trailer

3 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

HBO's forays into the digital world era have been troubled at best. Their HBO Go service, strictly for cable subscribers, has been hampered in the past with streams straining to meet the demand for high volume episodes, and a sometimes confusing ability to even set up the service. But that all (presumably) ends today. HBO has teamed with Apple for HBO Now. Via the Apple TV or through an in-app purchase, users can fork over $14.99 per month to grant them access to HBO's library of content, both new and old. Perhaps best of all, you don't need a cable or satellite subscription. So forget searching for torrents — as soon as a new episode of your favorite show starts airing on HBO, you can stream it from whatever iOS device or computer you want. And of course, on your TV with Apple's device (which they've just dropped to $69). However, is that price point worth it? »

Whether animated ("The Incredibles") or live-action ("Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol"), Brad Bird knows a thing or two about creating a spectacle and making it feel personal all at the same time. While one could argue that the Tom Cruise franchise tilted more toward the blockbuster, Bird looks to have found the perfect mix of scale and intimacy with his upcoming "Tomorrowland." And today a new trailer for the movie has arrived. The rather eclectic ensemble of George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, Britt Robertson, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key, and Thomas Robinson feature in the Damon Lindelof penned movie, about which many details are still under wraps. The 'Akira' Remake Appears To Be On Hold Again

4 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It has been a somewhat long and tortured road toward the live-action remake of anime classic "Akira." In early 2012, Warner Bros. pulled the plug on the movie just as production (which had established offices in Vancouver) was getting ready to gear up. Over a year later, they rehired Jaume Collett-Serra (the man behind the upcoming thriller "Run All Night") to direct, and last summer  Dante Harper was tapped to pen the script. And now? Nothing it would seem. Doing the rounds for "Run All Night," Collider chatted with Collet-Serra, and had a rather succinct answer when asked about the status of the movie: “No, no. There’s nothing.” And when pressed a little further about whether or not the movie was on his timeline, the filmmaker stated: “It’s a Warner Bros. question.” We can't say we're all too bummed by this news. It was never a great idea to start with, »
