No Marvel at 2015 Comic-Con?

7 hours ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The San Diego Comic Con has become quite the interesting beast. I first attended the convention back in 2006, a time when you could actually cover the convention as a member of the press. You didn't have to wait in long lines just to sit in a giant convention hall and actually leave said convention hall to participate in interviews and then return to check out more teaser footage. The last time I attended Comic Con was back in 2009, when I had to get up around 4 Am to wait in line with a bunch of teen girls lining up to see the The Twilight Saga: New Moon panel just so I can see the Avatar footage. I felt defeated. It was a low point in my career here at RopeofSilicon and I haven't been back since. However, this isn't to say Comic Con doesn't have its place in this industry, but »

Friend of Robert Durst’s Murder Case Reopened as HBO Documentary Reveals New Evidence

7 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

New evidence revealed in HBO’s six-part Robert Durst documentary might support the reopened investigation into the 2000 killing of his friend, Susan Berman. In Sunday’s fifth episode of “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst,” Berman’s stepson found an envelope with a letter written by Durst to Berman in 1999. Also Read: HBO Developing Will Strouse Supernatural Drama From ‘Newsroom’ Producer The block lettering on the envelope seems to be identical to an anonymous note sent to the Beverly Hills Police Department on December 23rd, 2000 alerting them to a “cadaver” at Berman’s house; the same day police believe Berman was. »

Shailene Woodley Praises Edward Snowden as a "Hero," Plays His Girlfriend in New Oliver Stone Movie

The U.S. government may believe that Edward Snowden is a criminal, but Shailene Woodley doesn't. In fact, the Insurgent star, who plays Snowden's longtime dancer-acrobat girlfriend Lindsay Mills in Oliver Stone's upcoming drama about the National Security Agency whistleblower, thinks he should be celebrated for his work. "I define a hero as somebody, who against the judgment of other people. if they believe something will positively impact the world and they choose to do it and honor their integrity that's what I sort of consider a hero, no matter how big or mall a feat they create," she told me this weekend while promoting Insurgent (in theaters on March 20). Box Office: ‘Chappie’ Stumbles, ‘Unfinished Business’ Bombs

8 March 2015 8:18 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Neill Blomkamp’s “Chappie” and “Unfinished Business” with Vince Vaughn added up to a weekend to forget at the U.S. box office.

Overall ticket sales plunged as “Chappie,” a science-fiction adventure about a sentient robot, topped charts with a weak $13.3 million from 3,201 locations. Going into the weekend, Sony Pictures was aiming for a debut of roughly $15 million and some analysts expected the film could hit $20 million. Reviews were tepid, and the picture is the latest in a long line of R-rated new releases such as “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “Focus,” which may have hurt it with moviegoers looking for something that appeals to kids as well as adults.

“There’s been a glut of R-rated movies starting from the first of the year,” said Rory Bruer, Sony’s worldwide distribution chief. “I think there’s some R-rated fatigue.”

The odds may have been against “Chappie” from its inception. »

Pay attention, people. This is how you shut down someone who is disrespecting you in a way that is both badass and effective. Lebanese news anchor Rima Karaki was interviewing Muslim scholar Hani Al Seba'i during a segment about Christians joining Isis and other extremist Islam groups. Al-Seba'i is known for his controversial opinions, but things got really heated when Karaki asked a direct question about how Isis is able to recruit people from different faith backgrounds. When Al-Seba'i refused to answer and instead danced around the question with a history lesson, Karaki attempted to steer him back to the original topic, as they were running out of time. The Directors Guild of America has called for more work on set safety in the wake of DGA member and “Midnight Rider” director Randall Miller pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the February 2014 death of Sarah Jones.

Miller received a sentence of two years in prison, 10 years probation, a $20,000 fine and 360 hours of community service in a court hearing Monday in Georgia.

“This tragic accident and its consequences must serve as an indelible reminder to everyone involved in film production that safety on set is of paramount importance,” the DGA said in a statement. “In the year since Sarah Jones’ horrific death, the dialogue within the entertainment community about being vigilant on set and speaking up if something seems unsafe has certainly increased, and organizations including the DGA have reiterated the availability of 24/7 safety hotlines to report concerns.”
