Character error

The "British CIA" character (Brosnan) advises the Dwyer family to go to Vietnam and "apply for asylum". This is not an appropriate term and a secret service agent of sorts would know that. Dwyer (Owen) later echoes this advice, but that is in itself logical: he is an engineer and does not (need to) know anything about international law.

Continuity

When Jack and his family first arrive to the their hotel The Imperial Lotus, there is a welcoming banner on display in the lobby with Jack's picture on it, along with 2 other men. Jack's picture is on the far left, a black and white picture of an older man is in the middle, and on the right is a picture of a younger man with short brown curly hair (this man also happens to be the man Jack witnesses being executed by the rebels in front of the hotel right after the rioting begins because he is an American). Then later on in the movie, after Jack and his family make it across to the other roof, one of the leaders of the rebels spots Jack. The rebel is wearing the welcoming banner around his neck, he then holds it up and shows Jack the picture of himself, but now the banner has changed. Jacks picture is still on the left and the middle picture is the same, but the far right picture is no longer the young man with curly brown hair, its now an older man with gray hair and glasses.

Errors in geography

The country in question is not mentioned but supposed to be somewhere in SE Asia. Sometimes we can hear the 'rebels' speak or shout in Khmer, some signs are in Khmer but some signs are also in Burmese and then someone speaks about Kampuchea but on a few occasions we hear people speaking Thai while they have to cross the border to Vietnam. Thailand doesn't share a border with Vietnam.

Factual errors

The scene after the tank shot the building, the person on the microphone was clearly speaking Khmer (Cambodian), not Thai. He said, "You can not run, we will shoot to kill". Some scenes had the people speaking Thai.
As the family enters Vietnam in the boat, the Vietnamese soldiers warn off the rebels by shouting at them in English. In reality, they would have spoken Vietnamese, Khmer or even French, but never English.

Plot holes

After neglecting to pickup the numerous weapons laying around after some of the rebels have been killed, it is almost as if the Dwyer family thought that they were in a gun free zone.

On numerous occasions when the Annie and Jack were attempting to escape, they had an opportunity to pickup a weapon to use as as a last chance defense. This makes no sense, unless they thought they were in a "gun free zone".

Revealing mistakes

In the wide shot right before Jack returns to the hotel, a rebel is seen bludgeoning a fallen police officer. He's quite clearly hitting the ground.
