The Buzz:
Since I missed out on the novel's phenomenon, I'm going to take advantage of sitting in a movie theater full of fanatics who are curious to see how Christian and Anastasia translate to the screen. Personally, knowing that these fictional BDSM scenarios have generated so much attention and controversy in an era where you can stream pornography while waiting for the bus makes me feel as though we're moving backwards as a culture; it's been 40+ years since Behind the Green Door ushered in cinema's golden age of porn, and just about about 20 years since we all started looking for it online.

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)- Action | Adventure | Comedy | Crime
A spy organization recruits an unrefined, but promising street kid into the agency's ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.
Director:Matthew Vaughn |

The Buzz:
Director Matthew Vaughn's fifth feature and the movie's R-rated spy action seems like a natural extension of the work Vaughn did on X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass and Layer Cake. The Layer Cake connection is particularly interesting, given that that movie essentially served as Daniel Craig's James Bond audition tape. On its own, Kingsman looks like a total blast -- fun, funny, exciting, original. Add in the fact that early reviews have been incredibly enthusiastic, and this is without question my most anticipated movie of the month of February.

The Last Five Years (2014) - [Limited]- Comedy | Drama | Musical | Romance
Based on the musical, a struggling actress and her novelist lover each illustrate the struggle and deconstruction of their love affair.
Director:Richard LaGravenese |

The Buzz:
There are two built-in audiences here: the theater-goers who love the musical upon which this indie movie is based, and the people who turned Pitch Perfect first into a sleeper hit, then into a franchise. Richard LaGravenese was a great choice of director - he should be able to translate the musical's structure to the screen and keep the emotions grounded and relatable, all the while delivering a breezy crowd-pleaser.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014) - [Limited]- Comedy | Horror
Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav are vampires who are finding that modern life has them struggling with the mundane - like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts.

The Buzz:
It's got to be tough to sustain this type of character-based comedy for a feature-length movie, and every reviewer I follow and trust has indicated that Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi have seriously honed their combined skills in the years since Eagle vs. Shark, which might now need a second look. The movie apparently breathes eternal life back into the vampire genre; I've even been quoting the trailer.

Old Fashioned (2014) - [Limited]- Drama | Romance
A former frat boy and a free-spirited woman together attempt the impossible: an "old-fashioned" courtship in contemporary America.
Director:Rik Swartzwelder |

The Buzz:
Wise move on the part of this production to contrast itself with Fifty Shades of Grey instead of attacking the movie like they are two candidates running for political office. Hopefully reviewers will give the movie a fair shake instead of instantly pigeonholing it as another Faith film (even if the money here is from the same company that financed God's Not Dead, which deserved its clinical shredding from critics who gave it consideration).
