Watch: Go To Heaven Or Hell In Trailer For 'Walter' With William H, Macy, Milo Ventimiglia, Neve Campbell & More

32 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Where does your soul go after you die? Walter knows. He's the self-proclaimed son of God who can tell just by looking at someone whether or not they'll go to heaven or hell, but regular life isn't so easy to figure out for Walter as you'll see in the first trailer for the appropriately titled, "Walter."  Starring Andrew J. West, Justin Kirk, Neve Campbell, Leven Rambin, Milo Ventimiglia, Brian White, Peter Facinelli, Virginia Madsen, Jim Gaffigan, and William H. Macy (phew), the story finds our movie ticket-taker facing a couple of human problems: he's got feelings for the candy counter girl but can't figure out how to approach her, while he's also dealing with a ghost stuck in limbo who doesn't know which way his final fate will lead. Luckily, Walter has a psychiatrist of sorts to try and help him out. The film arrives in limited release on March »

Daily | Berlinale 2015 Diary #7

44 minutes ago | Keyframe | See recent Keyframe news »

The first few minutes of Eisenstein in Guanajuato aren't terribly promising. Peter Greenaway threatens to overload the screen with too many digital doodads and it looks as if subpar acting is going to be given a pass. But then Greenaway loosens his tight grip just a bit and allows his story to take off. And that story is surprisingly not really about the prematurely aborted making of ¡Que viva México! in 1931, but instead about Eisenstein's fascination with the country whose socialist revolution predated Russia's by half a decade, about a series of initiations, sexual and otherwise, and about falling in love. 10 Filmmakers Who Disowned Their Own Movies

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

This week has seen the arrival of one of the most curious cinematic items of the last few years, one that few thought would ever see the light of day: Stephen Greene’s “Accidental Love.” Never heard of it? That’s because the film was at one time known as “Nailed” and was shot by Oscar-nominated “The Fighter,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle” director David O. Russell, for whom the seemingly non-existent Greene is a pseudonym. “Nailed” predates the three Russell films listed above: it's a political satire about a waitress (Jessica Biel) shot in the head with a nailgun that causes hypersexual behavior, who then teams with an ambitious congressman (Jake Gyllenhaal) to campaign for those with unusual injuries. The film went before cameras back in 2008, but production was halted multiple times after difficulties with financiers and was eventually shut down without the completion of key scenes. Legal battles ensued, »

Watch: 6 Clips And 2 Featurettes For 'The Duff' With Mae Whitman

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Maybe it seems as if making a teen comedy shouldn't be that difficult, but getting the ingredients right is no easy feat. The tone certainly requires a specific touch, but it's authenticity that can be hard to nail. It requires the end result to not feel calculated, like a movie made for teens, yet it should speak to that audience directly and easily. Does "The Duff" have it what it takes? Well, today we have six clips and two behind-the-scenes featurettes from the film. Mae Whitman (Ann/Bland/Her) leads the movie, playing the titular Designated Ugly Fat Friend who employs of the help of her childhood friend/total hunk/popular guy to remake her into someone dateable so she can approach the dude she has a crush on. Simple enough premise, and Whitman seems to be taking to her first lead role like a duck to water. "The Duff" opens on February 20th. »

Trailer Watch: Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck, with Amy Schumer, Bill Hader and LeBron James

The first trailer for Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck is just fine, setting up its premise clearly — Amy Schumer is a professional success despite her monogamy-repelling sleeping-around, which is refreshing — and its romantic throughline with sports doctor Bill Hader. It looks more disciplined than usual visually, with Ballet 422 co-director/Afterschool cinematographer Jody Lee Lipes behind the camera, and LeBron James seems like he’s about to outdo Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the basketball player-turned-onscreen-comic sweepstakes. »

Watch: Terry Gilliam's Animated Title Sequence For 'Cry Of The Banshee' Starring Vincent Price

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Pop quiz – what is Terry Gilliam’s earliest credited work on a feature film? If you guessed anything “Monty Python” related, you’re actually a tad off. A year before “Monty Python’s Fliegender Zirkus,” and five years before “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” the actor/writer/director/everything man proved just how much of a film factotum he really is. Though he’d been working in TV since the late '60s, Gilliam’s first feature credit came in 1970 in the form of title designer for “Cry of the Banshee.” If you’re thinking, “Cry of the what?” you’re probably not alone. At all. Directed by Gordon Hessler — whose credits also include “Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park” and twelve episodes of “CHiPs” — the film stars Vincent Price as Lord Edward Whitman, an evil Elizabethan nobleman who tries to exterminate an entire coven of witches. Balikbayan #1 Memories of Overdevelopment Redux III

Dear Danny,

How silly is it that, as cinephiles, our happiness is so bound up with the films we watch? My mood fluctuates at festivals, often based on what film I watched last. One recent morning exemplified this. You and I went to see the press screening of Chilean director Pablo Larraín’s new film, The Club. I was keen on this one as his last film, No (2012), was superb (I recall the mysterious Celluloid Liberation Front wrote on it for us from Cannes). Unfortunately, this film was entirely different, not just in style, but in its relationship to its subject matter, its characters, the world. Where No was invested in people, The Club takes on a very heavy topic with a level of disdain that left me feeling cold. The film is about a group of priests, »

Hugh Grant Says He Finds Most Romantic Comedies 'Repugnant' at 'The Rewrite' Premiere

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

A mix of veterans and newcomers gathered for a screening of writer-director Marc Lawrence's latest film, "The Rewrite." The jovial atmosphere of the event, hosted by The Cinema Society and Brooks Brothers, stemmed both from the heartfelt nature of the film — typical for the work of Lawrence ("Music and Lyrics") — and the exceptional chemistry that formed on-set between the actors. "The Rewrite" stars Hugh Grant as Keith Michaels, an acclaimed screenwriter past his prime. Divorced, nearly broke, estranged from his teenage son and holding onto not-so-vaguely sexist attitudes, he relocates to Binghamton University to take on a teaching job and get back in the swing of things. While there, he meets his match in single parent Holly (played by Marisa Tomei), who's juggling two jobs whilst back at school to find her calling in a more creative field.  Characteristic for any Lawrence-Grant collaboration (this is their fourth film together), there's a wistful, »

Berlin: Wim Wenders on the Trap of Awards, His Approach to 3D and His Love for James Franco

German filmmaker Wim Wenders has attended the Berlin International Film Festival countless times before, but this year marks a special homecoming for the Berlin-based master. Wenders not only has his new film, the 3D drama "Every Thing Will Be Fine," screening out of competition at the event, but he's also the recipient of this year's Golden Bear award for his remarkable body of work. In honor of the achievement, the festival is screening 10 of his films, including 1984 Palme d'Or winner "Paris, Texas" and his latest documentary, the Oscar-nominated "The Salt of the Earth." New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is following suit by hosting a career retrospective that launches in March (more information can be found here). Ahead of the world premiere of "Every Thing Will Be Fine," Indiewire sat down with Wenders in Berlin to discuss his legacy. Are you one to frequently revisit your work? Why Vimeo is Pursuing More High-Profile Acquisitions

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Until recently, Vimeo has positioned itself as a platform for creators wanting to self-distribute -- basically a niche-oriented version of YouTube. But now, with a couple of high-profile acquisitions, the online video platform is going head-to-head with Netflix and Amazon. Yesterday Vimeo announced it had acquired the exclusive U.S. first window download to own Alex Gibney's "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief" following its HBO broadcast. The film, which recently premiered at Sundance, is based on the Pulitzer-Prize winning book by of the same name by Lawrence Wright. The film will be available on Vimeo on Demand in September 2015. "After HBO's exclusive holdback, we will be the only place you will be able to purchase 'Going Clear' digitally," Sam Toles, Vice President, Content Acquisitions and Business Development, Vimeo, told Indiewire. The film will also be available on HBO's various subscription services (such as HBO Go), but, »

James Gunn Says Marvel Thinks His Story For 'Guardians Of The Galaxy 2' Is "Risky"

3 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

We're still two years away from "Guardians Of The Galaxy 2," and it would seem James Gunn is using that time to sort out the story, and continue what seems to be an endless string of interviews. Of course, he's inevitably going to be asked about the sequel, and he's gracious enough to answer those questions, instead of doing the "I can't talk about it" dodge, but one wonders if the director isn't talking himself into a corner of fan expectation. Regardless, Gunn chatted recently on Allison Rosen's podcast, and again teased some details about what we'll see in part deux. "...it’ll answer some of the questions that were put forth in the first movie about Peter Quill’s father and who he is and what’s going on with that. Watch: Explore Steven Spielberg Making 'Jaws' Shot-By-Shot In 33-Minute Video

4 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

When Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” hit theaters in 1975, it did things no other film has done to date. In addition to scaring scores of cinema goers out of the water at the peak of summer beach season, it became the first film in U.S. movie history to surpass $100 million at the box office. By this definition, the first Hollywood blockbuster, “Jaws” would go on to hold the title for the most commercially successful film ever for two years (before being supplanted by “Star Wars”). But Spielberg’s thriller wasn’t just financial gold; the film was also a critical success, nabbing positive reviews, three Academy Awards, and a Best Picture nomination. Forty years later, “Jaws” is still a go-to classic for film buffs, students, and enthusiasts. In his new 33-minute study, circumspect and studious filmmaker, Antonios Papantoniou, breaks down nine scenes from “Jaws” in this latest “Shot by Shot” video. »
