Box Office: Will Smith’s ‘Focus’ Sets Sights on $20 Million Opening

A new romance is dominating the bigscreen.
Will Smith’s “Focus” has dethroned “Fifty Shades of Grey” as the No. 1 film in the country. The crime drama opened to $6.5 million on Friday in the U.S. and has set its sights on $20 million this weekend. Tracking had pegged a debut in the $21 million to $23 million range.
Although the respectable launch doesn’t prove that Smith is still one of the Hollywood’s biggest stars, the Warner Bros. film is nowhere near the disaster that the sci-fi tentpole “After Earth” wrought for Sony. “Focus” also carries a much smaller, $50 million pricetag — a third the size of “After Earth’s” budget.

She leaves her successful career behind unexpectedly after the medical scare to become an advocate for those lost in the same ever-changing system.
Written by Sheldon Turner and directed by Michael M. Robin, “The Advocate” was inspired by the real story of former talent agent Byrdie Lifson-Pompan, who collaborated with doctor and health education specialist Valerie Ulene to launch a health-care consulting firm.
Turner and Jennifer Klein are exec producing, with Lifson-Pompan and Ulene serving as consulting producers.

German humor is a distinctly conflicted concept in “Hedi Schneider is Stuck,” an improbably wry, compassionate character comedy about that least chucklesome of topics: clinical depression. Setting out in a register of sprightly farce, this study of a cheery working mother drawn into a despairing psychological vortex after a sudden panic attack turns out to be a far riskier exercise in tone than its outward trappings suggest. As the protagonist’s mood drops, so too does the tenor of writer-helmer Sonja Heiss’s perceptive, even-handed script, though the results are never maudlin or po-faced. The presence of “Everyone Else” director Maren Ade on the producers’ bench will boost distributor interest, though the pic’s resistance to simple classification — it’s both a charmer and a challenge — might place “Hedi Schneider” in a commercial tight spot.
