The Mason Jazz Handbook is intended as a guide while you are a student here at Mason. The nature of Jazz is “adaptability” and I hope that we all have input into the program and let the program evolve into a place where the standards of the masters can be upheld. There are probably more myths and misconceptions surrounding jazz and jazz musicians than any other field. Your years in school are not the end all and be all, just a chapter in an on-going pursuit. You are not finding yourself here – you are building yourself. We all know the cliché “put in a solid foundation.” There is no curriculum than can turn someone into an artist and this is especially true in jazz. However, a firm understanding of where the music comes from and its cultural significance will put you on the right track. The only real requirement is: Build your groove and swing hard!
“You only go though life once, so it would behoove you to get it right the first time.”
--Sonny Rollins
