OPERATION ISLANDS OF HOPE
The IDF’s Humanitarian Aid Delegation to the Philippines
13/11/13 - 27/11/13
Operation Islands of Hope
On November 7, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines. Considered to be one of the strongest tropical storms in recent history, Haiyan’s destruction led to thousands of casualties and missing people. Water and electricity infrastructure were harmed, roads were ruined and many structures collapsed.
The Home Front Command, trained to provide emergency aid in crisis, immediately left for the Philippines. The delegation consisted of 147 soldiers including medics and logistic personnel as well as search and rescue forces. Within a few hours, the delegation took off, carrying 100 tons of supplies.

848

100

60

36

Over a time span of nearly two weeks, 2,686 patients, out of which 848 were children, were treated in the field hospital in Bogo City by IDF doctors. Other than casualties and injuries suffered from the typhoon, medical treatment was provided to those who needed it, such as people suffering from chronic illnesses and other medical conditions.

60 surgeries were performed, including cancerous tumor removals and eye surgeries. Most of the surgeries performed were emergency, life-saving surgeries that required urgent medical attention. In addition, the IDF Gynecological team was involved in approximately 36 births.

It was in moments like these in which the IDF delegation’s true nature was shown – its commitment to helping, without any desire or need for a thank you. The overall feeling here is one of persistence and commitment to a cause – to do whatever is needed to help the people in need.
