Dragon Ball Xenoverse Shows Off Character Customization And Game Modes

Last week, Bandai Namco streamed a good deal of footage from Dragon Ball Xenoverse, highlighting custom characters, game modes and other features. You can watch an archived version of their Twitch broadcast above, if you want to see more of the game than we have in trailers thus far.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse contains a new story where you play as a character of your own creation. The game involves restoring the Dragon Ball timeline after someone begins manipulating it and undoing history.

Dimps are developing Dragon Ball Xenoverse. The game will be released on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on February 17th in North America and February 13th in Europe.

  Well, I’m a DBZ fan and I think this sounds pretty dope. I just hope the gameplay is fun.

  You apparently aren’t aware of the hundreds, if not thousands, of Saiyan OCs out there who are sons of Goku or Vegeta. =P
  
  But seriously, I don’t see why “real” DBZ fans wouldn’t want to play as custom characters. In fact, I can see such a feature as being quite desirable for DBZ fans for two reasons:
  
  1. If you were a fan of the non-Saiyan characters in DBZ, you basically got shafted. The further the show went on, the more it became focused exclusively on the (half-)Saiyan characters while everyone else was left behind. As such, it would actually be a nice change of pace to play as a non-Saiyan who will actually remain relevant.
  
  2. If you were a fan of female characters in DBZ, you got…well, mostly shafted. There were a couple of them, some of which were even fighters, but even those were basically pushed to the sidelines the further the show went on and essentially retired the moment they became romantically involved with someone. Also, if you want to play as a female Saiyan, your only option canon-wise is Celipa, who was a one-off character that made a very short appearance.
  
  Considering this, it’s actually a pretty nifty idea to have a DBZ game where you can play as a female fighter that isn’t going to quickly be rendered irrelevant.
  
  Now, don’t get me wrong; the sheer presence of custom characters doesn’t mean this game will be good, especially if the feature ends up being rather limited. But I think it’s rather disingenuous to suggest that there is no demand for such a feature within the DBZ fanbase.

    Any demand for it only comes from silly 10 year olds who should never be listened to. This OC garbage that these kids dream up is the last thing that should ever be put into a DBZ game. They sealed their fate by adding in custom characters. Another flopped DBZ game like all the others lately. Not really a shock considering they can only use silly gimmicks to get people to buy instead of making a good game. Maybe one day they’ll wisen up and work hard on an actual good DBZ game.

      Dude, custom characters can only ENHANCE the awesomeness of DBZ (or any franchise for that matter). It’s immersion. It’s how games were made to be played. Who wouldn’t want to go Super Saiyan 3?

Being able to create female characters was all it took to sell this game to me. Plus the fact that I don’t remember the last time there was a good Dragonball Z game, so it’s safe to say I’m excited for this.

This game looks awesome, but i can’t help but feel like it took a few steps backwards from the improvements past games made.. like the transformations, and not being able to customize normal character’s moves. Having special moves tied to a specific costume of Vegeta kinda makes me sad. And transformations only lasting a short time, while cool, really detracts from some of the fun that came with using those forms in other games for a whole match (at least for an aesthetic look)

  The transformations being temporary is a step forward. Transformations in the Raging Blast/Budokai Tenkaichi serieses were little more than character changes. Transformations in this game are handled as ultimates. When you transform, yes, you have a limited amount of time, but your attack, defense, and speed increase, and the ki cost for both other ultimates and all of your supers are almost 0.
  
  Transformations will matter more in this game because it’s a warning that the opponent’s about to try and dish some punishment.

I am excited for this game immensely due to the fact that we are finally allowed to make Female characters. Okay having some moves tied to certain costumes isn’t great but it still isn’t bad. This is the first game where DbZ have done there own story (kinda) and our created characters are a part of that, it’s a very good step. Also I haven’t played a dragon ball game in ages due and normally they fail to excite me when announced but this has excited me and I’m thoroughly looking forward to it. Like most people I’ll be making a female and can’t wait to play it myself ^^

As far as evolution and learning from past mistakes this game takes the cake!….Now if only we knew how big the roster is (I’m not hoping for a gargantuan Tenkaichi size roster, but something with a bit of volume would be nice :P)
