Sundance: 'David Robert Mitchell on 'It Follows,' Std Anxiety, Childhood Nightmares

21 minutes ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

I first met David Robert Mitchell at Cannes 2010 when his first film "The Myth of the American Sleepover" played Critics' Week, after earning raves at SXSW and ahead of its 2011 opening via IFC. Well, the Cannes programmers still like his movies, screening his sophomore effort "It Follows" as well. The film has played fests including Toronto, Fantastic Fest, AFI Fest and plays the Park City at Midnight section this week at Sundance. RADiUS-twc opens the film stateside March 13, 2015. Shot again near his hometown of Detroit, Michigan, Mitchell brings the same dreamy tone to a horror tale, taking full advantage of the destroyed Michigan landscape (as does Ryan Gosling's Cannes entry "Lost River"). Mitchell wants to scare us, pulling us into his likable characters' romantic entanglements and then puts us on edge as we wonder who's following who. His greatest skill as a filmmaker is immersing us in his characters' points-of-view--we're bobbing in a. »

Sundance Review: Jason Segel Is Actually Pretty Great As David Foster Wallace in The End of the Tour

27 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

To its credit, The End of the Tour makes it very clear that David Foster Wallace would have fucking hated The End of the Tour. Based on David Lipsky’s memoir, James Ponsoldt’s film looks at a few days in the life of the late author during the 1996 book tour for his breakout novel Infinite Jest. Lipsky, played in the film by Jesse Eisenberg, was trying to write a Rolling Stone profile of Wallace, played here by Jason Segel, and found his subject to be pathologically afraid of the attention — terrified of looking like a phony or trying to capitalize on his newfound celebrity. The film may look like a biopic, but it’s ultimately about that very fear.Ponsoldt’s film starts roughly, with the standard biopic clichés of Lipsky finding out about Wallace’s 2008 suicide, then flashing back to 1996 and to his attempts to convince his editors »

Sundance Film Review: ‘Digging for Fire’

44 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Joe Swanberg continues his march toward the mainstream even as he deepens his signature brand of hangout film in “Digging for Fire,” a lovely slice of everything and nothing centered on a housesitting couple who discover possible evidence of a murder. There are feints toward a bona fide mystery plot, but that genre element is just a pretext for a stealth marital drama. The film is held together through strong improv, tight editing (by Swanberg himself), moody cinematography and a synth score (from Dan Romer) that parties like it’s 1991. This is Swanberg’s starriest picture to date — even if some appearances, like Jenny Slate’s, amount to glorified walk-ons — making breakout success eminently possible.

Concerning the adventures of married parents Tim (co-screenwriter Jake Johnson) and Lee (Rosemarie DeWitt), “Digging for Fire” opens with the two of them and their son, Jude (played by Swanberg’s toddler, Jude, the finest »
