The Buzz: When a sex thriller winks at its audience as much as the first trailer for The Boy Next Door does, I want to occupy an entire row of seats with my friends and take in every ridiculous and unrestrained moment. Jennifer Lopez and Ryan Guzman make for such a believable, illl-fated on-screen couple, it's surprising they've never dated IRL. Who knows -- maybe they are!
Mortdecai (2015)- Action | Comedy
Juggling angry Russians, the British Mi5, and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai races to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain a code that leads to lost Nazi gold.
Director:David Koepp |

The Buzz: This genre riff doesn't look as fun as Kingsman: The Secret Service and Johnny Depp's charisma is ebbing at the moment, so a cruel box-office fate could be in store for Depp's reunion with his Secret Window director, David Koepp.
Black Sea (2014)- Adventure | Thriller
In order to make good with his former employers, a submarine captain takes a job with a shadowy backer to search the depths of the Black Sea for a submarine rumored to be loaded with gold.
Director:Kevin Macdonald |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Themes of class warfare, corporate greed, and the power of private wealth fuel Kevin Macdonald's latest, a contemporary thriller that plays to Jude Law's gruff side and casts the reliable Scoot McNairy and a handful of sturdy international actors. Something tells me this one might wind up on many "Most Underrated Movies of 2015" lists.
Strange Magic (2015)- Animation | Family | Fantasy | Musical
Goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion.
Director:Gary Rydstrom |
|

The Buzz: Movie-industry vet and four-time Oscar winner Gary Rydstrom directs this story by George Lucas that looks pretty entertainment from an adult perspective. As in: I could imagine tolerating repeat viewings if my theoretical children were to play it on a loop. The animation looks solid and the jokes land. Plus: girl power!
Cake (2014)- Drama
Claire becomes fascinated by the suicide of a woman in her chronic pain support group while grappling with her own, very raw personal tragedy.
Director:Daniel Barnz |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Though she was overlooked for a Best Actress Oscar nomination, we've been reading about Jennifer Aniston's make-up free performance in this drama for the better part of a year, but we've also been warned that the powerful cast doesn't get much help from their director, Daniel Barnz, who specializes in earnest storytelling (Won't Back Down, Beastly, Phoebe in Wonderland). Not to dog on Barnz, but I think plenty of people are wondering what this movie could have been like if it had been handled by someone else.
Mommy (2014)- Drama
A widowed single mother, raising her violent son alone, finds new hope when a mysterious neighbor inserts herself into their household.
Director:Xavier Dolan |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz:
At the age of 25, Xavier Dolan has an unparalleled influence on the international film scene than any other filmmaker his age. The Montreal-based writer-director's latest caused a stir at Cannes, igniting worldwide distribution deals and Oscar buzz. While the latter didn't happen, Mommy has received incredibly strong reviews both for Dolan's style (a shift away from his other works) and actress Anne Dorval's performance.
Dolan will direct his next project, The Life and Death of John F. Donovan, in English, and while this certainly will not be his last movie in his native French, Mommy could serve as a dividing line in career.
Red Army (2014)- Documentary | Biography | History | Sport
A documentary that tells the story of the Soviet Union's famed Red Army hockey team through the eyes of its captain, Slava Fetisov.
Director:Gabe Polsky |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: A surprise omission from the Best Documentary Oscar shortlist might ultimately serve as good publicity for Gabe Polsky's heralded profile of sport, politics, and patriotism. As we've said before: the best documentaries can be on a subject that might not appeal to you directly but wind up pulling you in because of their intentions and themes. So you don't need to be a hockey devotee in order to connect with this one.
The Duke of Burgundy (2014)- Drama
A woman who studies butterflies and moths tests the limits of her relationship with her lover.
Director:Peter Strickland |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Peter Strickland's follow-up to Berberian Sound Studio has a different kind of obsession on its mind -- the psychosexual connection between two women, presented as a mating ritual. I've read a fair bit about the movie so I hope my expectations haven't been toyed with, but I understand it hooks you from its evocative opening credits.
