  • Protecting the Nation's Marine Wealth in the West Philippine Sea” as guest speaker on the second day of the three-day 19th National Convention and Seminar of the Philippine Women Judges Association (PWJA) held from March 5-7, 2014 at the Manila Hotel. Also in photo is Supreme Court Associate Justice Teresita J. Leonardo-De Castro. In his speech, Justice Carpio articulated the Philippine State's constitutional obligation to protect its marine wealth in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and explained how our governent is fulfilling this constitutional duty by filing the arbitration case against China. Likewise, he has explained why our country is entitled to its full 200 NM (nautical miles) EEZ in the West Philippine Sea and why China's 9-dashed line claim is invalid for being contrary to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Lastly, he has explained why any joint venture with China under its terms will constitute a “culpable violation of the Constitution” and underscored that the exercise of pursuing the arbitration case against China “is to reserve the use and enjoyment of our marine wealth in our EEZ exclusively to Filipinos, as mandated by the Constitution, which we have all sworn to uphold.” This year's PWJA theme is “Women Judges: Keeping Up With Information Technology and Issues in International Law.” (Photo by Francis S.
