Touchscreen display

New—A touchscreen interface makes it easier to use features like X-Ray, dictionary lookup, highlighting, and more. And with a glare-free screen that looks like real paper, you can read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room

Weeks-long battery life

Kindle does not require power to maintain a page of text, allowing you to read for weeks on a single charge.

Easy on the eyes

Every time your eyes switch from a bright screen to a dimmer, ambient room, your eyes have to adjust, which may result in fatigue. With Kindle, the page is the same brightness as everything else in the room, so theres no adjustment needed.

Lighter than a paperback

Kindle is lighter than most paperback books, making it easy and comfortable to hold in one hand for extended periods of time.

Reads like the printed page

Kindle uses actual ink particles and proprietary, hand-built fonts to create crisp text similar to what you see in a physical book. The blacks and whites on the screen are uniform, improving text and image quality.

Sharp, dark text

Enjoy text that reads like the printed page. All fonts have been hand-tuned at the pixel level for maximum readability and comfort.

Take and share notes

Add margin notes that you can edit, delete, or even export from your device to your computer. Share highlighted sections and meaningful quotes on Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads, and see passages frequently highlighted by other Kindle readers.

Flip through without losing your place

With Page Flip, you can skim page-by-page, scan by chapter, or skip to the end for a sneak peek without losing your place. Show me

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it! Nov. 19 2014
By Rad Talk TOP 500 REVIEWER
After using the "Kindle for PC" app on my laptop for a few years, I decided to get a dedicated e-reader.

This one is ready-to-use straight out of the box, very easy to follow menu/ tap settings, etc, and a useful tutorial. Kindle content downloads quickly and easily.

I chose this one (over Paperwhite) only because I don't usually read in low-light conditions. The screen reads fine even in artificial light. Since the interface and operating system for both are exactly the same & this model is 1oz lighter, the $60 surcharge (for Paperwhite) didn't feel worth it. In-store (Staples), I compared them at the same light level (lowest setting on Paperwhite = this model's one and only setting).

Not sure why there's no sign-out of "My account" option but my guess is the content can't be read if so. Also why there's an option to protect it w/ a Device Password and/or add Parental Controls.

To fully charge it, I used my BlackBerry USB power adapter or there's an included USB-only cable. Have yet to buy a case* for it.

I also found some videos on YouTube that were very helpful in helping me decide which model to choose. :)

For this price and as a simple, effective e-reader, it's absolutely worth it.

ETA: * = I've since bought (and love) this case; listed as "Kindle 7 2014 (Slim Shell)": MoKo Amazon Kindle 7th Gen Case - Ultra Slim Lightweight Smart-shell Stand Cover Case for Amazon Kindle 2014 ( 7th Generation ), BLACK

Absolutely wicked device. Really appreciate the dictionary function. Only problem is the sorting function. It's very tedious to sort out large numbers of books.

I was a little surprised at how easy to use this was. The first time I turned it on, it asked me a couple of questions and was ready to go within a few minutes.
Alright, it does not have the romance of a book. But then, it does not close on you unless you stick your thumb right into the spine. You can read it with just a thumb! And you can change the font and text size, and make the same book different when you get bored.

Very very useful! There are plenty of free books to last me a fairly long time.

I bought the Kindle with the warranty and have not yet bought a case. A 30$ case for a 70$ gadget, really??

BTW: PDFs dont work as well as books. But at least you can have them accessible on the device.

Let's start with the good stuff - it does what it is supposed to do. It works, I can transfer my e-books, I can read what I want to read, mostly how I want to read it. But, it is a perfect example as well for what is NOT progress: I miss my old, near-first generation Kindle that survived about 4 years (we had four in our house, and mine survived the longest). First, the feel of the previous one: the plastic was higher quality and had a nicer feel. The current one is glossy, easily scratched after only 2 months of use. It is thicker. Yes, it is touch-pad, but that is not better: there really isn't much that an e-reader has to do; so navigating with just a few buttons is actually preferable. The most frustrating part about this one is that because of the touch, I keep getting unwanted interruptions due to hitting the 'fonts' screen involuntarily and I always have to set it back to my preferred size - and I haven't yet discovered a way to lock my favorite font in. So Amazon, I hope this one at least is at least as durable, although I doubt it. It is not progress. But it works.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good, well-priced e-reader! Nov. 2 2014

I purchased this kindle about a month ago. In my case I wanted something that I could push technical PDFs to, and read books during my commute to/from work. So far this hasn't let me down. I've downloaded a number of books on it both through amazon and Baen books. No issues so far. The ability to push PDFs to the kindle has been absolutely wonderful for work. I can have a technical manual on my kindle and work in front of my computer without having to swap between windows.

For the commute its been great. I have read two novels on it. The only downside is sometimes I tap the screen to flip the page and the bus hits a bump causing me to double-tap the book, and it zoom ahead a lot of pages.

The best thing of all - this kindle uses the same charger as my: cellphone, daughter's cellphone, and son't kindle fire.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed Dec 30 2014
By emilie
I bought this Kindle for travelling purposes. After 1 year and a half, the screen just stopped working. It still charged and I tried resetting it but the touch-screen just completely stopped working to the touch. It had always been in a case and was never damaged. I had done a lot of research prior to my purchase and was so excited to use it but was so disappointed when it stopped working at the moment I needed it the most. I was obviously expecting this purchase to last a while and I have to say I'm very frustrated that after 1 year and a half my 150$ went down the drain. I guess that's just what happens after your one year warranty is over...technology starts breaking on you. I would never recommend buying a Kindle again.

3.0 out of 5 stars not so good for lefties Dec 23 2014
I like the whitescreen and the lighter kindle, but being lefthanded I have issues with the touch screen page turning. I find that I continually turn the pages backward by accident, and have to use my other hand to turn the page same a regular book. Previous to this one, I had an older version of kindle with the manual page keys and keyboard which worked really well and was not limited to a righthanded reader.
My son had a touch screen kindle and downgrade to the Kindle 5, as he had the same issues with the accidental page turning. Please bring back the kindle with the manual buttons for both left and right handed readers.
Thanks,
