Ratings: ‘Gotham,’ ‘Scorpion’ Back With Best Scores in Months

26 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Rookie hits “Gotham” on Fox and “Scorpion” on CBS, each of which was heavily promoted the previous day during their respective network’s NFL playoffs coverage, kicked off the new year Monday by delivering their best ratings in months. The night also saw NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice” look good as it bowed in its regular timeslot, finishing neck and neck with ABC’s premiere of “The Bachelor,” which took a tumble from last year.

ABC and CBS tied as the night’s top-rated network in adults 18-49, with the Eye pulling ahead in adults 25-54 as well as total viewers.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, Fox’s “Gotham” (2.5 rating/7 share in adults 18-49, 6.9 million viewers overall) was Monday’s No. 1 show in adults 18-49, rising 9% (0.2) from its final original of 2014 and outperforming “Almost Human” in the comparable hour a year ago (1.8) by nearly 40%. Watch: Ethan Hawke and Andrew Niccol Talk Drone Thriller 'Good Kill' (New Trailer, Interview)

28 minutes ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

There was a time that a brainy anti-drone movie like "Good Kill" would be mid-priced studio fare. Kiwi native Andrew Niccol, who launched his Hollywood career by writing "The Truman Show," is one of those maverick indies who writes the movies that interest him, from "Gattaca" and "Lord of War" to "In Time." And Ethan Hawke is eager to collaborate with the filmmaker, even when the global marketplace is resistant to thoughtful original movies like "Good Kill." Returning for his third go-round with Niccol, Hawke stars as a former Top Gun who is benched in a Las Vegas military base trailer piloting drone aircraft. He goes home to his wife (January Jones) every night, but dropping bombs in Yemen and Afghanistan from 7,000 miles away is not his idea of how to fight a war--especially when the CIA gets involved. The film also stars Zoe Kravitz, Bruce Greenwood, and Jake Abel. »

How Lena Dunham Pitched A Fifth Season of ‘Girls’ To HBO

29 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

New York’s American Museum of Natural History has many exhibits of taxidermy under glass: a mule deer; a wolverine; even some miniature mastodons. On Monday night, however, the museum put something else on display – a case study in how to get another season of your show on the air when the current one hasn’t completed its arc.

In unveiling the fourth season of the much-buzzed about series “Girls” to a big crowd of well-wishers and celebrities, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo let slip that he had already approved a fifth season of the show. The reason, he said, was that the series continued to operate at such a high level of quality that he saw no reason not to let it continue.

As things turn out, “Girls” creator and producer Lena Dunham and producer Jenni Konner made part of their pitch for the next cycle of the series »

Producers Guild Awards nominations: 'Boyhood,' 'Birdman' and (surprise!) 'Nightcrawler'

The Producers Guild of America announced its nominees for Best Picture on Monday: "American Sniper," "Birdman," "Boyhood," "Foxcatcher," "Gone Girl," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Nightcrawler," "The Theory of Everything," and "Whiplash." These mirror our forecast for the Best Picture lineup at the Oscars with two glaring exceptions:  the PGA snubbed third-ranked "Selma" and "Unbroken" (#8 on our chart) in favor of "American Sniper" (#13) and "Nightcrawler" (#14). Among the other films overlooked by the guild were two big box office hits: "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods." That "Selma" and "Interstellar" were slighted could be down to voters not getting screeners from Paramount due to production delays.   -Break- The guild and »

Rising Rap Stars Migos Are Expecting a Big 2015

At this time last year, the beguilingly wild Atlanta rap trio Migos were still subject to whispers that they might be a one-hit wonder, thanks (if that’s the word) to their 2013 jam “Versace.” The group’s Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff then spent the better part of 2014 ensuring their staying power, releasing two mixtapes – No Label 2, which featured the hit, "Fight Night,' and Rich Nigga Timeline – and touring widely. The effort paid off: Migos’ mixtapes have been downloaded 1.7 million times and their music has earned 49 million YouTube views as well as 47 million monthly spins on Pandora. 2015 is already shaping up to be just as productive for the burgeoning stars—who are planning to release their official debut album, Y.R.N. 2, early this year.  We spoke with Quavo and Offset – as they prepared to leave their Atlanta home for a concert in Paris – about their »

Russell Crowe Says Actresses’ Ageism Complaints Are ‘Bullsh*t’

43 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Fifty-year-old Russell Crowe has an opinion on why it becomes so hard for actresses to land good parts as they get older. His theory: It's all their fault. As Crowe tells Australian Women's Weekly, "I think you'll find that the woman who is saying that [the roles have dried up] is the woman who at 40, 45, 48, still wants to play the ingénue, and can't understand why she's not being cast as the 21-year-old." What about the fact that those ingenue roles are basically all that's left in Hollywood, as older men are routinely paired off with actresses who are decades younger? Crowe has some counterexamples: "Meryl Streep will give you 10,000 examples and arguments as to why [those complaints are] bullshit, so will Helen Mirren, or whoever it happens to be." So that's two working actresses over 60. The problem is solved. »

Who Is Agent Carter? A Brief History of the Marvel Heroine

48 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Don't feel bad if you have no idea who the title character of ABC's Marvel's Agent Carter is. She's based on a comics character who's been around in various forms for decades, but who is by no means iconic in the comics world. Prior to 2011, most geeks would've been hard-pressed to name a single story arc involving her. But in that year, she made her live-action debut in the cumbersomely titled Captain America: The First Avenger, portrayed with grit and grace by Hayley Atwell. The movie was a hit, Carter went on to have a few live-action Marvel appearances, and a couple of years later, boom, here we are: Peggy Carter is a tentpole character for Marvel Entertainment.Indeed, Peggy's sudden rise to fame is a kind of bellwether for the world comics fans live in now: Afterthoughts have become flagships. TV Ratings: 'Gotham,' 'Scorpion' start 2015 high, 'Bachelor' helps ABC split Monday

Fast National ratings for Monday, January 5, 2015. A slew of network favorites started 2015 on high notes as "Gotham," "Scorpion," "Mike & Molly" and "NCIS: Los Angeles" were among the shows delivering above-season-average performances on Monday. "NCIS: Los Angeles" was particularly strong, delivering season highs in most measures and pushing CBS to a dominant overall win and to a tie with ABC, driven by the "Bachelor" premiere, the show's lowest rated premiere yet, in the key demographic.  Although it was stuck in fourth among young viewers and third in the key demo, NBC also got a second consecutive solid night from "The Celebrity Apprentice." On to the numbers... Among adults 18-49, ABC and CBS both did a 2.2 rating for Monday night, tops in the key demographic. Fox was a close third with a 2.0 key demo rating and NBC's 1.7 key demo rating followed right behind. The CW averaged a 0.3 key demo rating for Monday. »

Anne Hathaway Advises Neil Patrick Harris to Do the Opposite of What She Did at the Oscars

With February 22 just around the corner, this year's host, Neil Patrick Harris, probably doesn't need any advice — seeing as he already has quite a few awards-hosting gigs on his résumé. Whatever he decides to do, however, it probably should not be anything Anne Hathaway did when she hosted. (Remember that debacle?) It's not mean to say this if she agrees with it. She told The New York Times Magazine as much:The Oscars are coming up. Do you have any advice for Neil Patrick Harris about hosting? Do the opposite of what I did, and you’ll be fine. What do you think went wrong? I think it’s so obvious that it doesn’t even need to be identified. He’ll be great. He’s a natural host. It helps that the best advice is no advice. »
