Review: The Weird, Wonderful 'Togetherness,' HBO's Newest Modern Family

23 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

"My whole life, everybody told me, 'Stop weirding out,'" 37-year-old husband and father Brett Pierson (Mark Duplass) laments to an acquaintance in HBO's winsome "Togetherness." "It was used as a verb in my house, like, 'Don't weird out, Brett.'" Fortunately, as written and directed by Duplass and his brother, Jay -- with an assist from Nicole Holofcener -- the series develops a warm, sincere weirdness that is often more relatable than the crisp irony of "Girls." Lena Dunham's bracing slice of New York life is largely about the idea of adulthood. "Togetherness" is a comedy for adults. In this sense, "Togetherness" is a lovely complement to HBO's Sunday night lineup, the bridge between the consistently surprising but uneven "Girls" and the muted, ruminative "Looking." All three depict the families we construct from friends, lovers, siblings, and cousins after lighting out for the big city in our twenties --. »

Amazon Studios Cancels Series Order for Chris Carter's The After

23 hours ago | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Amazon Studios has cancelled its series order for The After, a supernatural drama from X-Files creator Chris Carter, our sister site Variety reports.

Along with Bosch (which recently wrapped production on its freshman run), Transparent (already renewed for Season 2), the recently released Mozart in the Jungle and others, The After received a green light from Amazon back in March, after its pilot received positive reaction via the streaming service’s unique preview process. Only the pilot wound up produced, however.

“We have decided to not move forward with The After,” Amazon Studios VP Roy Price said in a statement. “We »

Ratings: ‘Gotham,’ ‘Scorpion’ Back With Best Scores in Months

26 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Rookie hits “Gotham” on Fox and “Scorpion” on CBS, each of which was heavily promoted the previous day during their respective network’s NFL playoffs coverage, kicked off the new year Monday by delivering their best ratings in months. The night also saw NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice” look good as it bowed in its regular timeslot, finishing neck and neck with ABC’s premiere of “The Bachelor,” which took a tumble from last year.

ABC and CBS tied as the night’s top-rated network in adults 18-49, with the Eye pulling ahead in adults 25-54 as well as total viewers.

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, Fox’s “Gotham” (2.5 rating/7 share in adults 18-49, 6.9 million viewers overall) was Monday’s No. 1 show in adults 18-49, rising 9% (0.2) from its final original of 2014 and outperforming “Almost Human” in the comparable hour a year ago (1.8) by nearly 40%. How Lena Dunham Pitched A Fifth Season of ‘Girls’ To HBO

29 minutes ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

New York’s American Museum of Natural History has many exhibits of taxidermy under glass: a mule deer; a wolverine; even some miniature mastodons. On Monday night, however, the museum put something else on display – a case study in how to get another season of your show on the air when the current one hasn’t completed its arc.

In unveiling the fourth season of the much-buzzed about series “Girls” to a big crowd of well-wishers and celebrities, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo let slip that he had already approved a fifth season of the show. The reason, he said, was that the series continued to operate at such a high level of quality that he saw no reason not to let it continue.

As things turn out, “Girls” creator and producer Lena Dunham and producer Jenni Konner made part of their pitch for the next cycle of the series »

'Fargo' showrunner details season 2, rumored 'True Detective' rivalry

32 minutes ago | EW - Inside TV | See recent EW.com - Inside TV news »

Can Fargo do it again? The first season of FX's small-town crime thriller impressed critics, stunned skeptical Coen brothers devotes, and earned 18 Emmy nominations. But now showrunner Noah Hawley is attempting a complete creative reboot for season two. There's a new small town setting (Luverne, Minnesota), a new time period (1979), a new story (about rival mob gangs) and new characters (including a married couple played by Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons and a young, not-yet-cast version of the first season's retired state cop Lou Solverson). Below, Hawley answers EW's burning questions about his creative plan—and also addresses that other crime anthology show. »

Ben Feldman took a nostalgic, '90s-tinged walk into his memories of youth for EW's Pop Culture Personality Test. The A to Z star revealed his love of many things '90s, such as his childhood crush on Elizabeth Hurley, his diplomatic stance regarding East Coast and West Coast rap, and his regrettable emulation of Tyler Durden fashions from Fight Club. 'Bachelor' premiere is lowest-rated ever: Was 3 hours too much?

47 minutes ago | EW - Inside TV | See recent EW.com - Inside TV news »

Maybe asking fans to watch a three-hour The Bachelor premiere was a bit too much. The 19th season of ABC's reality hit returned to its worst ratings ever Monday night for a debut episode that was an unprecedented length. The Bachelor had 7.7 million viewers and a 2.2 rating among adults 18-49, falling 19 percent from last year. Competition might have been a factor too. Bachelor faced Night 2 of NBC's Celebrity Apprentice (6.6 million, 2.1), which was down 9 percent from Sunday's impressive opener, yet still solid. And it's worth pointing out The Bachelor's final hour rose to a decent 2.4 rating that won 10 p.m. »

TV Review: ‘Hindsight’

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Reminiscent of the movie “Sliding Doors,” VH1’s latest scripted series, “Hindsight,” contains a familiar but nevertheless intriguing premise: What if handling one moment or action differently could seriously alter your life? Throw in a time-travel element, “Life on Mars”-like anachronisms and the desire to get home again, and there’s plenty of material to mine in this promising hour, which, like most such exercises, fares best if you don’t overburden the concept with a lot of thought or questions, like why someone who goes back in time would bother working when she could simply make a killing by investing in Apple.

The premiere finds Becca (a very appealing Laura Ramsey) preparing for her second wedding. Yet she can’t help but wonder if she’s going to get it right this time, plagued by doubts about her judgment that have her “questioning every decision I’ve ever »

Bradley Cooper Shows Off His Air Guitar Skills on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

1 hour ago | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Some things are just universal truths: the sky is blue, the grass is green, and Bradley Cooper is awesome, and he showed yet again why he’s so great last night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Cooper, who was celebrating his 40th birthday yesterday (still can’t believe he’s 40—the guy doesn’t look anywhere close to that), stopped by The Tonight Show to promote his new film, American Sniper, but he and Jimmy Fallon quickly got to talking about Cooper’s current role on Broadway as John Merrick in The Elephant Man, which led to Fallon bringing up the actor’s “little” musical talent. “I’m glad you said that, because it is very little,” Cooper responded. That response was followed by a laughing Fallon confirming that Cooper was in fact referring to his music abilities and not a certain part of his anatomy (this joke continues throughout the whole video, »

TV Review: ‘Empire’

1 hour ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The commercial logic informing “Empire,” Fox’s new primetime soap, is obvious: Music provides a backdrop with ancillary benefits, especially on a network airing “American Idol”; and while diversity has improved, there remains a dearth of serious drama with predominantly African-American casts. Yet the show that emerges, despite an impressive ensemble headlined by Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, feels perfunctory — as if subplots were chosen from a preordained serialized-tv checklist. By that measure, this handsome series dutifully plucks all the chords, yes, but doesn’t invest them with much surprise or conviction.

Howard plays Lucious Lyon, who has spent his life building Empire Entertainment into a Motown-like juggernaut. Still, a silent visit to the doctor suggests trouble lies ahead, which is hastened when he informs his three sons, without explaining why, that he intends to begin grooming one of them to succeed him.

Take a Look At These New Vikings Season 3 Cast Photos

When History launched its first-ever original scripted series with Vikings back in 2013, I’m not sure if the network could have expected that the series would have had both the critical and commercial success that it currently does. Over the course of its first two seasons, Vikings has been nothing short of a hit for History, and now fans of the series eagerly await the premiere of the show’s third season this year, which promises to be just as dark, emotional, and violent as the first two. Along with two new cast photos (one above and one you’ll find below), here’s the full description for Vikings Season 3: “With the promise of new land from the English, Ragnar leads his people to an uncertain fate on the shores of Wessex…. TLC Faces Pressure to Cancel ‘My Husband’s Not Gay’ Special, GLAAD Calls Show ‘Dangerous’

2 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

TLC is facing growing criticism over the decision to air “My Husband’s Not Gay,” a one-hour special slated to air on Jan. 11, which follows a group of Mormon men who, according to the network’s description, “are happily married and attracted to their wives, but they are also attracted to other men. They refer to it as Same Sex Attraction… not gay, Ssa.”

A Change.org petition protesting the special has amassed over 71,000 signatures urging TLC to cancel the broadcast. Josh Sanders, a gay Christian man, began the petition because he believes the show “promotes the false and dangerous idea that gay people can and should choose to be straight in order to be part of their faith communities… The men featured in this show deserve to be shown compassion and acceptance. Perhaps even more importantly, TV viewers need to know the horrific consequences of trying to change who you are. »
